Job Description:

The Director of Children's Ministries is a part-time, paid, salaried staff position at Zion Church involving approximately 30 hours per week. The Director of Children's Ministries works under the aegis of the Lead Pastor, but is accountable to the Staff Parish Relations Committee of Zion Church. The Director serves a teacher, educator and leader in our ministries to children.



 The Director of Children’s Ministries: 

  1. shall be a mature Christian who is committed to Jesus Christ as the Lord of his/her life. The Director’s life out to be one that is growing in his relationship, and his/her life ought to demonstrate evidence of the spiritual fruit" of this relationship.
  2. shall be actively involved in the Body of Christ prior to coming to Zion Church. Previous leadership experience within the Church and especially with children and related children's ministry is expected. (Applicants need not be United Methodist in background or current church membership.)
  3. shall, within six (6) months after employment at Zion, become a full member of Zion Church and so bear the commitments, obligations, and call to the ministry and mission of Zion that belongs to our entire congregation.
  4. shall have four (4) or five (5) years of equivalent education, training and work related to children, the educational development of children, or a bachelor's degree from an approved college or university with a major in children's education, development or a related degree.
  5. shall have experience in leading and teaching children. Additionally, the Director must have skills in recruiting, training and deploying adults in teams to do the work of ministry with children.
  6. shall be committed to a team ministry style of work with a church staff that bases its ministry on an Ephesians 4 model (equipping the saints for the work of ministry).  It is vital that our Director be a "good fit" within our congregation, and that our vision, values and goals for ministry with children agree with his/her spiritual gifts and strengths.
  7. shall be creative in performing his/her ministry and work and other tasks that may be assigned or associated with this ministry. 


 The Director of Children's Ministry: 

  1. will lead our Children's Ministry, expanding its present ministry and making it a greater tool for reaching and winning children and their families to Christ and the Church.
  2. will recruit, train and deploy volunteer, servant teams of Christian adults in ministry with children and to children.
  3. will lead this ministry cooperatively with our Zion Church staff.
  4. is expected to visit in the homes of children, especially into the homes of new residents and prospective members where children are present. The purpose of the visit being the building or relationships and to enroll and engage the children in the life and ministry of our congregation.
  5. will develop and implement ministries that ensure Zion Church is a "safe sanctuary" for children and their parent(s). Special attention must be given to adult leaders in our children's ministry. It is vital that all our volunteer servant ministers with children be known as persons of faith and moral and ethical integrity.
  6. will develop and implement a year-round strategy for extending our children's ministry beyond the walls of Zion Church.
  7. will endeavor to put Zion's children's ministry on the "cutting edge" of innovative and effective ministry that will nurture and lead children to be life-long disciples of Jesus Christ.

Other Expectation and Responsibilities and Information 

  1. The Director is accountable to the Staff-Parish Relations Committee of Zion Church, and is subject to the rules and regulations of the DISCIPLINE of the United Methodist Church as well as those contained in the Personnel Policy of Zion Church.
  2. The Director will have an office at Zion Church. Regular, weekly hours in the office should be established and maintained.
  3. The Director will attend staff meetings and the meetings of the Leadership Team of the Church, and its Church Conference.
  4. The Director will supervise the Nursery Care staff and volunteer ministry that supports our Sunday Services and related worship schedule.
  5. The SPRC will provide an annual review and evaluation of the Director's ministry.
