Brief Church Mission Statement:  Building Faith, Changing Lives, Sharing Christ

What is the congregation’s or organization’s vision for ministry? Additionally describe how this vision is lived out.

First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach, FL (FPCVB) is a strong and vibrant Christian community. We like to share with our congregation, friends, and guests that “We are a Church large enough to meet your needs and small enough to need you!” Though not an official mission statement, we believe that we are "to share Christ in such a way that others share Christ so that all can live in Christ."

FPCVB is a congregation that is faithful to a vision of the gospel where we promote unity, faithfulness, and love. While acknowledging our human frailty, FPCVB continues to be engaged in mission within the church and beyond. The nature of our staff and leadership affords continuity for our congregation allowing them to take risks and to promote new ideas in service to Christ.

The staff of FPCVB has six core values that drives our service: God is Good, Praise /Alleluia, Authenticity, Creativity, Generosity, and Team Accountability. FPCVB has established a "Five Talent Church" structure. This structure is based on the "five talents" of the church found in worship, ministry, fellowship, hospitality, and discipleship. FPCVB believes it is more than a one talent church, more than a two talent church, we are a five talent church and we are responsible to increase the blessings that God has bestowed upon us!

Our congregation is strong! Yet, there is still untapped potential where we believe we can experience powerful spiritual and numeric growth and expand our ministry as led by the Holy Spirit.

How do you feel called to reach out to address the emerging needs of your community or constituency?

Vero Beach Florida is a small, "mircopolitian", community on the Atlantic coast of Florida. This is a small community that possesses many of the qualities, characteristics and services of a metropolitan community (health care, arts, entertainment, employment, finance, etc.). Vero Beach and Sebastian, in Indian River County, have been noted for being one of the fastest growing communities of its size category in 2016. Vero Beach possesses, some of the best weather, golf, fishing, boating, kayaking and surfing in Florida and is a great location for those who love the outdoors.

It is in this community that we serve. As with many communities in Florida, we have many seniors (older adults) with a strong number of young families. Our church seeks to minister to the total spectrum of age and diversity. Our community always has new residents so the stability and unity of the church is important. We do not seek to be the oldest or youngest church, simply the most faithful church.

We have a strong commitment to youth ministry. There is an amazing, dedicated youth space in our Center for Christian Life. We have many youth in our congregation and more to whom we minister who have yet to know our church fully. Moving those youth from the "crowd" to the "core" and a commitment to Christ through the church is a central focus of our ministry.

A central belief, when it comes to our vision of ministry, is that "everyone is a child of God and deserves to be treated that way!

How will this position help you to reach your vision and mission goals?

We believe the position of youth director will help build "Christlike" relationships with our youth and young families. The middle school and senior high years are critical in the faith development of youth. They need a dedicated, trusted leader to exemplify spiritual and personal growth. Youth also need a mentor who is faithful and has a strong theology of the body of Christ (i.e., the Church).

First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach has a strong tradition of youth ministry. We are known for supporting the continued the development of young leaders. This certainly is not limited to those who are members of the youth group. Those who have served as youth Directors for our congregation have gone on to different ministries; four have gone to seminary and ordained ministry while others have continued their ministry to youth in other locales. We do believe it is part of our mission to ensure that our youth leaders have a positive and expressive experience of ministry.

The person called to fill this role will be a person who will love and care for our youth. They will be a person who will love and care for the families of our youth. They will be a person who will love and care for the church family that is First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach, Florida.

Provide a description of the characteristics needed by the person who is open to being called to this congregation and or organization.

The characteristics needed to fill the position of youth director at First Presbyterian Church are bound first and foremost in love, faith, and hope. We expect our youth director to love our church family as we are called to love one another in the great commandment. The characteristics of this love will be revealed in kindness, patience, grace, and understanding. The great sentence used in ordination is also applicable for this position: we ask that our youth director serve with energy, intelligence, imagination, and love.

Youth ministry demands great effort. The characteristic of the youth director for First Presbyterian Church will certainly include a strong work ethic and great flexibility in regard to time and talent.

The youth director will need to possess characteristics that allow him or her to work closely and effectively with youth and volunteers in regard to planning and implementing our youth ministry.

What specific tasks, assignments, and program areas will this person have responsibility?

The youth director will be responsible for their portion of the church’s budget and therefore they will need to be able to manage and establish a budget. There will be planning for weekly, monthly, and yearly events. There'll also be a need to be strong time management.

There will be clear expectations that the youth director will be able to lead small group gatherings for youth and develop advisers who can organize small groups. These small groups may include also families and young adults as they impact the lives of the youth members of our congregation.  Weekly gatherings, age-appropriate bible study, fellowship opportunities, local mission/service projects, participation in worship services, summer retreats and experiences at Rock the Universe or Night of Joy, are just some of what contributes to the personality, character and nature of our youth group!
