Job Description:  Senior Pastor / Minister of Music

 

Reports to:  Elder Board

 

Purpose of the Position:  Has the primary responsibility for preaching and teaching, leading worship, guiding a team-based ministry model, and communicating vision.

 

Major Duties:

  1. Preaching / Teaching:
  1. Preach the Gospel and relevant, biblical sermon series in the worship services.
  2. Study Bible and resource materials in preparation for the sermons.
  3. Develop preaching schedule for worship services.
  4. Teach periodically small group discipleship lessons to train small group leaders or to build up the body.

 

  1. Worship
  1. Lead worship services with the Worship Team.
  2. Design Spirit-led worship services.
  3. Collaborate with other ministry leaders to incorporate drama, faith stories, special music, etc. into the worship service experience.
  4. Coordinate worship practices; guide selection of music; build Worship Team
  5. NOTE on the CBC music style: 

80% Standard Contemporary - Hillsong, Chris Tomlin, Starfield, Newsboys, Matt Redman, David Crowder, Delirious, Aaron Shust, etc.

20% Contemporary Hymns (rewritten/updated music) - Indelible Grace, Red Mountain Church, etc.

 

  1. Vision, Purpose, Goals:
  1. Discern “where God is moving”, the changing spiritual issues, challenges and needs facing the people at Calvary and in our community.
  2. Collaborate with Elders to establish 3-5 clearly defined yearly, corporate, CBC goals based upon the 5 purposes (i.e. fellowship, discipleship, service, evangelism, and worship).
  3. Work with the Elders and staff to discuss, develop, update and communicate the Strategic Plan for CBC.

 

H.  Desired Qualifications (Qualities):

  1. Exemplify biblical qualities of an Elder (1 Timothy 3, Titus 1, 1 Peter 5).
  2. Demonstrate open, growing relationship with wife and family.  Wife supports husband and is involved in an on-going church ministry.
  3. Present gifts/abilities:  Leadership, teaching, wisdom, faith.
  4. Exhibit music abilities/gifts:  Ability to lead worship, music conducting and performance, play instrument (e.g. piano or guitar).
  5. Display team-building qualities, solve problems, has a teachable spirit, love people.
  6. Have a ministry degree:  Bachelor Degree in Bible or Pastoral Ministries.
  7. Have experience leading in Christian ministries for a minimum of five years; has experience in leading music ministry.
  8. NOTE: Youth ministries experience is advantageous.

 

I.  Expectations:

  1. Maintain spiritual disciplines with God, (i.e. consistently read Bible, pray, tithes, worship God, and seek opportunities to witness.)
  2. Live an exemplary lifestyle in private and in public.
  3. Attend church faithfully and fulfill responsibilities.
  4. Spend time influencing current and potential leaders of CBC.
  5. Develop relationships with seekers of Christ.
  6. Hold private discussions and decisions in confidence unless necessary to inform the Elders to resolve an issue.
  7. Pursue excellence in all his responsibilities; perform responsibilities in a timely fashion.
  8. Prepare to preach or teach in an emergency.
  9. Attend Christian leadership seminars or pursue higher Christian education classes for growth in areas of responsibility and for spiritual refreshment.

10. Perform some weddings and funerals.

Overview of Calvary Bible Church:

  • The current Senior Pastor has pastored at CBC for 26 years and desires to co-pastor as part of the pastoral succession plan.
  • Calvary Bible Church is a 50 year-old nondenominational, evangelical church with practical Bible preaching, contemporary music and drama.
  • CBC is Elder-led with attendance of 130-160 people.
  • CBC has sent out service teams to serve in a variety of mission projects (e.g. Albania, Ghana, Germany, Puerto Rico, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, New York)
  • CBC leads in the collaborative efforts with over a dozen other Evangelical churches in a pastor-led group called REACH (Rutland Evangelical Association of Churches).  This past year over 400 people from 14 evangelical churches volunteered to serve our community in 50+ sites.
  • CBC is active in a variety of family related ministries and outreaches: Awana, Family Fun Day, Junior Praise Team, Kids’ Church, Operation Christmas Child, Parents’ Night Out, etc.
  • Rutland is a city of 17,000 people in a valley of scenic mountains of south-central Vermont.  We experience the four seasons of weather. 
  • Sports, outdoor activities, the arts and dramatic plays are priorities to many families.
