Job Description:

I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE 

The purpose of the position is to direct and coordinate a comprehensive and expanding ministry for children, youth, and families that embodies our faith:

This position will work with the Pastor and Church Council in planning for, developing, and supervising the Children, Youth, and Family Ministries of the church in accordance with the policies and directions of the Vibrant Faith Team (Christian Education). 

 

II. ACCOUNTABILITY
The Director of Children, Youth, and Family Ministry shall be accountable to the Pastor as Head of Staff and to the Church Council. This position is supervised by the Pastor as Head of Staff in coordination with the Personnel Committee and accepts guidance from the Vibrant Faith Team and Church Council of Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

 

III. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

 

A. THEOLOGICAL IDENTITY
1. Have a clear testimony of faith in Jesus Christ and a call to this ministry position.
2. Be a mature, Christian with a strong biblical foundation.
3. Understand and enthusiastically support the theological identity of Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
4. Possess a general understanding and acceptance of the theological
identity of Holy Cross Lutheran Church as articulated in the Mission Statement and Vision Statements.
5. Is expected to maintain a personal discipline of daily prayer and devotion in an effort to deepen his/her relationship with Jesus Christ.
6. To continue to grow in your faith through study and prayer. 

 

B. CHILDRENS MINISTRY (birth – 5th grade)
1. To supervise the Orange Sunday school, Nursery and Vacation Bible School programs, and all volunteers associated with these programs.
2. Evaluate the above programs and their curricula annually.
3. To work with coordinators of the above programs to provide bibles, curriculum and materials and secure necessary equipment.
4. To coordinate nursery coverage for all worship services.
5. To work with Vibrant Faith Team in recruiting and training teachers and leaders for the Sunday school and Vacation Bible School programs.
6. To coordinate special programs and offerings which may include the following: Sunday School registration, Teachers Commissioning, 3rd grade Bibles, Musicals, Wednesday WOW, Noisy Offering, Teacher Recognition, and special roles in worship.
7. To promote and coordinate children going to Mt. Cross Elementary Retreats (3rd-6th grade). 

 

C. YOUTH MINISTRY (6th- 12th)
1. To develop a creative program for the Middle School and Senior High Youth and secure necessary leadership to ensure its success.
2. To supervise Orange Confirmation, the Sr. High ministry, and Sunday faith formation experiences.
3. Evaluate the above programs and their curricula annually.
4. To work with coordinators of the above programs to provide bibles, curriculum, and materials and secure necessary equipment.
5. To work with the Vibrant Faith Team in recruiting and training teachers and leaders for Confirmation, Sr. High, and Sunday school.
7. To coordinate special programs which may include the following: Mentoring program for confirmands, Jr./Sr. High registration for National Youth Gathering, mission trips and retreats, Easter breakfast, and Confirmation Sunday.
8. To coordinate with music and worship and Pastor for special roles in worship. 

 

D. FAMILY MINISTRY
1. To build relationships with (both Holy Cross and non-Holy Cross) children, youth and families, by contacting them in their homes, at school events, in the community, at church, etc. Set a positive example in personal relationships, family life, moral and ethical character as well as being a mentor and friend.
2. To be the primary interface, champion, and liaison between church and Holy Cross Lutheran School by developing ways in which churcn and school can strengthen their partnership.
2. To develop events, programs and gatherings to which participants can bring friends who may be seeking a church family.
3. To meet the programmatic, developmental and spiritual need of our families.
4. Be committed to a long-term development of Family Ministry with enthusiasm and dedication to working directly with people of all ages.
5. Be an active participant in the growth and development of Family Ministry
at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. 

 

E. COMMUNICATIONS
1. To provide a channel of communication between teachers, midweek staff, volunteers, Pastor, Vibrant Faith Team, Church Council, and School Board.
2. To keep the congregation informed about current and upcoming Children, Youth, and Family programs through social media, newsletter, bulletin, and other outlets as deemed necessary.
3. To collect and solicit comments, requests, and ideas from the congregation about on- going programs and program ideas for the future and discuss them with the Pastor and the Vibrant Faith Team. 

 

F. SUPPLIES
1. To obtain samples of curriculum to be presented to the Vibrant Faith Team for a collaborative effort to select the best curricula.
2. To inventory and maintain all equipment for church school use, and tovrecommend purchases to the Vibrant Faith Team.
3. To work with janitors to help coordinate cleaning and classroom set-ups. 

 

G. PHYSICAL PLAN
1. To supervise the condition of the church school rooms, their arrangement and other needs.
2. To recommend to the Property Committee, in consultation with the Vibrant Faith Team, needed improvement in the facilities to enhance the programs. 

 

H. HOURS
1. Part-Time (20 hours/week) to meet the needs of our church family.
Hours may include: Sunday morning for Sunday School and worship.  Midweek after school and evening children/youth programs, targeted attendance at children/youth activities and community activities. 

 

IV. CONFIDENTIALITY
A. Maintain confidentiality concerning financial contributions, pastoral care, counseling, and any information about members or friends of the church received directly or indirectly
B. Maintain appropriate confidentiality and professionalism concerning staff relationships
C. Maintain annual records of background checks for all adults working with children and youth. 

 

V. EVANGELISM
A. Provide regular opportunities (through retreats, worship, one-on-one
relationships) for children, youth and families in our church to respond to the Gospel by committing their lives to Christ.
B. Motivate and role model children, youth and families to share the Gospel with
their friends.
C. Plan outreach events that will draw children, youth and families from outside the church who need to know Jesus Christ.
D. Look for and coordinate opportunities for children, youth, and families to engage others outside of and beyond the four walls of Holy Cross and 1020 Mocho St. 

 

VI. NETWORKING
Develop relationships with other ministries in the community to further the Kingdom of God. 

 

VII. RELATIONSHIPS
The Director of Children, Youth, and Family Ministry shall function within the church ministry team, interfacing and coordinating with all staff and volunteers to accomplish the ministry of the church. As a member of the church staff, the DCYFM shall attend staff meetings and committee meetings as scheduled, responding to the requests of the Pastor and the Church Council in areas of responsibility. 

 

IX. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A bachelor's degree and/or 3-5 years experience in church and/or para/church ministries to children, youth and family.

XI. SOFTWARE QUALIFICATIONS
Have a working knowledge of word processing, Powerpoint, social media, and email. Working knowledge of iMovie, Final Cut Pro, ProPresenter 6, and Adobe products preferred. 

 

XII. EVALUATION
The Pastor/Head of Staff and the Personnel Committee will conduct annual performance reviews. 

 

XIII. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a part-time job with current funding for three years.  At the conclusion of the 3 years of funding, it is the sincere hope that the ministry can be sustained as part of our annual budget.


Compensation

This is a part-time position (estimated at 80-100 hours/month) with a salary commensurate with experience, education and the salaries for similar positions in other churches in our area.
