Job Description:

Vintage Faith Church (VFC) is a missional church located in the heart of Santa Cruz, California, an eclectic, artsy beach town that also happens to be one of the most unchurched, post-Christian places in the country. The church was planted about 10 years ago by Dan Kimball (who’s still on staff and co-leads the church).

 

The Director of Kids & Families Ministry at VFC will serve as the primary leader and vision-holder for ministry serving kids and families. This is one of the most vital and crucial roles at VFC. Pastor and theologian James Emery White states that, “[Kids & Families Ministry] is the most important ministry for the mission of the church.” This is because, for parents, nothing matters more than their kids.

 

Parents who would otherwise not step foot into a church will immerse themselves if their kids love being there. And parents who love Jesus and want to immerse themselves in a particular church will leave if their kids don’t want to be there. People often choose churches based on the quality and vibrancy of the kids ministry and how they support families.

 

But even more than all of this, Kids and Families Ministry is vital to the mission of the church because the research overwhelmingly shows that if a kid is introduced to a meaningful relationship with Jesus at an early age, the chances of that kid following Jesus for the rest of their lives increases dramatically. And as any parent will tell you, a church that partners with them in helping guide their kids toward a relationship with Jesus can make all the difference.

 

We currently have 3 Sunday gatherings and will also be launching a midweek program for kids and families in the fall of 2017. The Director of Kids & Families Ministry role will oversee the Kids and Families Ministry for VFC’s regular ongoing gatherings as well as special events throughout the year.

 

Qualities We Are Seeking For The Role:

·  A deep passion for and commitment to serving kids and families by being the primary person to design and create environments, systems and structures to help them grow deeper in relationship with Jesus, their families, ministry leaders, and each other

·  An entrepreneurial and visionary spirit committed to regularly leading the ministry toward growth and improvement in all areas

·  Desire and ability to focus a majority of their time on equipping, recruiting and unleashing a community of volunteers to do the work of the ministry

·  Desire and ability to oversee, train and delegate significant ministry responsibilities to paid staff and interns

·  Desire and ability to create, plan, and execute ministry strategies, along with specified goals, to move towards ministry growth for the sake of seeing kids and families flourish

·  Experience serving as part of a thriving Kids & Families Ministry team

·  Biblical, theological and/or practical ministry training in a formal academic is a strong plus

 

Core Philosophical Principles:

·  Regularly practice prayer, both personally and within leadership role, as the vital engine for making ministry happen

·  Embrace and execute the Exodus 18 principle of leadership, where leaders develop leaders; the DKFM role requires a primary focus on creating and implementing the systems and structures within which other paid staff and volunteer leaders can effectively engage in relational ministry to kids and families

·  Be an avid learner and student of the most effective kids ministries in the country and apply contextualized practices to VFC

·  Champion the Kids & Families Ministry as a vital part of the entire VFC community, rather than as a detached ministry (a common pitfall of age-specific ministries within churches)

·  Be a team player who contributes positively to the overall mission of VFC and engages all ministry relationships and responsibilities with humility, teachability, and flexibility

 

Primary Role Description:

·  The Director of Kids & Families Ministry is the primary leader and vision-holder for ministries serving kids and families at VFC, as well as VFC’s missional initiatives to reach and serve kids and families in the broader Santa Cruz County community

·  Recruit, retain, and support thriving volunteer teams who are doing the work of the ministry (Ephesians 4:11-12)

·  Create and implement systems for volunteer teams to be serving with maximum effectiveness while also allowing volunteers to serve at a healthy rhythm – this will require creating systems that include (but are not limited to) small group leaders, team leads, security team, welcome-area hosts, on-call volunteers for when life circumstances cause volunteers to back out, etc.

·  Oversee both paid staff and volunteer teams by regularly equipping and coaching them to administrate and execute all Kids & Families Ministry programs with a consistently high level of excellence

·  Oversee and maintain the systems and logistics of creating safe, dynamic, and effective environments for kids and families – this includes (but is not limited to) thorough vetting and background checks of all volunteers and staff, safety protocol training for teams, upkeep of all check-in and check-out systems, maintaining ministry space and keeping a high standard of excellence in aesthetics and execution, etc.

·  Research, study, and implement the most current and effective ideas for forming ministry around the spiritual and developmental needs of kids today – this includes (but is not limited to) the weekly curriculum, seasonal events, etc.

·  Create and implement ongoing practical support initiatives for parents, to come alongside them in engaging their kids in the discipleship process – this includes (but is not limited to) family events, training seminars for parents, parenting resources via digital media, etc.

·  Collaborate with youth ministry director and department to ensure a smooth and seamless transition every year for kids transitioning into the youth ministry

·  Create and oversee the annual Kids & Families Ministry budget

·  Create an annual calendar and a communication plan for families, to keep them well informed in a timely and well thought out manner, as well as to invite full participation

·  Create and implement a strategic welcome and follow up system for all new families and kids who visit VFC

·  Initiate and oversee efforts to connect kids to the overall VFC community – this includes (but is not limited to) Family Sundays, Baptism Sundays, Child Dedication Sundays, etc.

·  Create and implement dynamic midweek and summer programs for kids that serve VFC families and reach families in the broader Santa Cruz County community
