Position Purpose

Compass Evangelical Free Church is looking for a youth director/pastor who can take ownership of shepherding the hearts of 6th-12th grade students in Columbia, Missouri.  If you enjoy deep conversations with maturing young adults, seeing the transformation of a life lost to a life found, and delivering convicting messages guided by the Holy Spirit, then we invite you to prayerfully consider how you could be used by God to serve a community that is desperate for the light of the gospel.


About Compass EFC

Compass Evangelical Free Church has been serving God and the community of Columbia, Missouri for over 40 years. Compass has a strategic mission to Surrender, Connect, and Proclaim: surrender to God, connect to one another, and proclaim the gospel message of Jesus Christ. These three principles ground Compass in all decisions. Compass is a body of 300-350 dedicated Christians excited about serving the community and growing God’s church by sharing His message.


The Compass pastoral team consists of four positions: senior pastor, worship pastor, youth pastor, and children’s pastor. Compass is excited to fill the youth director/pastor position with a new team member who can own and lead the work of helping our students grasp who God is, what He has done, and how they can live a life that reflects the gift He has given them.


About Compass Youth Group 

  • About 20-25 middle school youth (grades 6-8)

  • About 20-25 high school youth (grades 9-12)

  • 10-15 adult/parent volunteers

  • 3 large universities (University of Missouri-Columbia, Columbia College, and Stephen’s College)

  • 6 public middle schools (one across the street from Compass)

  • Relatively diverse community



  • Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree

    • Seminary degree is preferred, but not required

  • Experience:

    • Sufficient expertise and passion in the spiritual development of young people

    • Experience working with youth

  • Skills and Abilities:

    • Highly relational with an ability to love, hear, inspire, and disciple

    • Ability to effectively communicate with youth, parents, and volunteers

    • Ability to communicate through various media

    • Ability to lead worship preferred, but not required


 Job Duties: 

  • Establish and oversee a plan for intentional youth ministry that evangelizes unchurched youth, assimilates new youth, and retains currently-involved youth. This includes selecting and/or developing a curriculum for Sunday school and weekly youth meetings

  • Lead, coordinate, and coach a team of adult volunteers

  • Envision, design, and implement youth gatherings and outreach events that create positive and encouraging environments to which teens are attracted

  • Work as a team with the pastoral staff to develop the overall church vision and provide pastoral care for the church body

  • Prepare and deliver Sunday morning sermons as opportunities arise

  • Opportunity to preach during Sunday morning services


 Personal Requirements:

  • Meet the biblical standards for elders/deacons

  • Be in agreement with the EFCA Statement of Faith and the Compass EFC Vision Statement
