Job Announcement: Children’s Ministry Associate


Buncombe Street United Methodist Church is located in downtown Greenville, SC. Since our beginnings in 1834, we have remained committed to scriptural holiness. Through an offering of wonderful programs of mission and outreach we work to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ.


Position   Summary


The Children’s Ministry Associate is responsible for assisting the Children’s Minister in planning, coordinating and carrying out the overall children’s ministry of the church for children in preschool through fifth grade.


Position   Responsibilities- Essential

  • Assist in coordinating and carrying out education ministries to the children.
  • Ensure the philosophy is consistent with United Methodism.
  • Maintain and work within budget.
  • Encourage volunteers and staff to work together as a team.
  • Ensure that all Safe Sanctuary policies are upheld by staff and volunteers.
  • Order, process, and distribute supplies and curriculum.
  • Purchase books and videos relevant to the ministry.
  • Support volunteer preschool Sunday School Coordinators with any needs they may have with preschool Sunday school.
  • Work closely with Preschool Sunday School Coordinators in the recruitment, scheduling and discipleship of Sunday school volunteers.
  • Assist in planning, leading and implementing summer camp programs.
  • Assist in planning, leading, and implementing Sprouts and Wednesday night Bible Studies.
  • Create communications related to the Children’s Ministry for newsletter, bulletin, social media and website.
  • Maintain and manage Checkpoint Security.
  • Coordinate “Newest Angel Ministry” and mail out “welcome” letters to all new parents.
  • Support and participate in our partnership with Thomas E. Kerns elementary school.
  • Serve on the Children’s Ministry Board.
  • Ensure well-attended early childhood and elementary educational programs.
  • Ensure well-attended children’s worship and leisure activities.
  • Ensure outreach to non-member children as an avenue to lead children and families to Christ.
  • Ensure a safe environment for children.
  • This job will include work at both of Buncombe Street campuses: Downtown and on Augusta Road.
  • Must be able to work independently and on a team.
  • Sunday morning work is essential

Essential Skills and Experience


  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Education, Social Work, Non-Profit, or Ministry
  • Previous experience working with children or relevant experience.
  • Organized with the ability to research and plan lessons and activities.
  • Creative with the ability to use different resources for successful implementation
  • Demonstrated initiative, conscientious and provides complete follow-through on areas of responsibility.
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Demonstrated experience developing trusting, open relationships with youth and their parents/guardians.
  • Extensive knowledge and use of Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to use judgment and discretion with confidential information.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and motivate a very diverse staff.
  • Ability to track, measure, and hold employees accountable for annual performance goals. 
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback to enhance employee’s performance.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating multiple, simultaneous, large-scale volunteer initiatives.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Professional demeanor, team oriented, positive and engaging attitude.
  • Highly self-motivated, self-directed, and strong problem solving skills. 
  • Strong organizational skills (record keeping, time management, follow up, etc.).
  • Excellent attention to detail and sense of urgency, with an emphasis on quality and accuracy of work.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills required.
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently multi-task, prioritize and deal with interruptions while meeting timely deadlines.
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Ability to tactfully handle stressful and difficult situations.
  • Strong ethical standards; ability to create trust and integrity with co-workers and community.
  • Personal attributes that include reliability, professionalism, ability to work independently, positive attitude, and ability to remain calm in stressful situation.
