Buncombe Street United Methodist Church is located in downtown Greenville, SC. Since our beginnings in 1834, we have remained committed to scriptural holiness. Through an offering of wonderful programs of mission and outreach we work to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ.

                                                                                                                                             

Position   Summary

 

The Director of Missions and Outreach will, under the direction of the Associate Pastor for Discipleship and in cooperation with the Commission on Mission Outreach, be responsible for local and foreign ministries and mission programs that meet the current and evolving needs of the church.

 

Position   Responsibilities – Essential

 

General:

  • Oversee a well-attended and growing mission and outreach activities as compared with outreach programs at churches of similar size.
  • In coordination with the rest of the ministry team, identify written short- and long-term goals for the Missions and Outreach programs to:
  • Coordinate the formal and informal mission’s services provided by church members to maximize the effectiveness of the programs.
  • Develop and shepherd within church members and attendees a deepened relationship with Christ through response to His call to care for His people.
  • Regularly evaluate the appropriateness of these goals and ensure that they are accomplished through programs in the following broad categories.
  • Provide evidence that participation in mission and outreach activities by church members and attendees helps provide a deepened relationship with Christ.
  • Provide evidence that mission and outreach activities (foreign, domestic, and local) result in both improved humanitarian conditions and provide opportunity to share the Gospel.
  • Be an advocate for social justice and the poor.

 

Foreign and Domestic Missions Programs:

  • Plan, develop, and direct the local, national, and foreign mission’s programs of the church with a focus on creating deeper relationships with Christ for both those serving and those being served.
  • Provide oversight and inspiration to facilitate church members to live out their call to ministry in local and foreign outreach.
  • Coordinate and lead mission trips sponsored by the Buncombe Street United Methodist Church, providing appropriate training and pastoral support for professional staff and lay persons involved in the trips.

 

Local Basic Needs Crisis Ministries:

  • Coordinate with local ministry programs, agencies, and church members to address crisis and basic needs issues within the church membership and local community.
  • Serve as a single point of contact for those local individuals seeking humanitarian aid from the church.
  • Manage the church’s Crisis Ministry in providing financial assistance to indigent individuals in our community.
  • Provide supervision and guidance to the Crisis Ministry Assistant.

 

 

General Administration:

  • Create, oversee, and administer the Missions and Outreach budget, including maintaining an active awareness and cultivation of internal and external funding sources for mission initiatives.

Essential Skills and Experience

 

  • College degree with emphasis in theology, social work, or lay ministry.
  • Desire to work with individuals of varying backgrounds and ages.
  • Willingness and ability to learn and respect the Methodist doctrine.
  • Ability to use judgment and discretion with confidential information.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and motivate staff.
  • Ability to track, measure, and hold employees accountable for annual performance goals.
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback to enhance employee’s performance.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating multiple, simultaneous, large-scale volunteer initiatives.
  • Extensive knowledge and use of Microsoft Office suite.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Professional demeanor, team oriented, positive and engaging attitude.
  • Highly self-motivated and self-directed with strong problem solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills (record keeping, time management, follow up, etc.)
  • Excellent attention to detail and sense of urgency, with an emphasis on quality and accuracy of work.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills required.
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently multi-task, prioritize, and deal with interruptions while meeting timely deadlines.
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Ability to tactfully handle stressful and difficult situations.
  • Strong ethical standards; ability to create trust and integrity with co-workers and community.
  • Personal attributes that include reliability, professionalism, ability to work independently, positive attitude, and ability to remain calm in stressful situation.

Beneficial   Skills and Experience

 

  • Ministerial or mission coordination and training preferred.
