Job Description:

Position Description:  The role of the Interim Lead Pastor will be to perform four primary functions during the course of our search for a permanent Senior Pastor. The Interim Lead Pastor will 1) love and care for the staff and congregation, 2) preach and teach God’s Word, 3) supervise, lead and support the Pastoral staff and 4) stay the current course of ministry.


The Interim Lead Pastor will not be considered a candidate for the Senior Pastor position. Local candidates preferred.

  • Operate as an accountable, authentic, caring, collaborative, team-first staff member, encouraging, praying for and building up co-workers, volunteers, congregants and guests.

  • Be intentional about one’s spiritual growth and development.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Along with our Associate Pastors, prayerfully and collaboratively form the worship teaching plan and schedule.

  • Lead congregational worship by regularly and consistently preaching from the Bible.

  • Ensure that the Sacraments are properly celebrated.

  • Engage staff members in the planning, coordination and implementation of worship—particularly with the Director of Worship Experience and Worship Planning Team.

Pastoral Care

  • Work in concert with the Executive Director, supervising, guiding and caring for the staff.

  • Provide spiritual leadership and counsel to the staff and congregation through personal witness, accountability and integrity.

  • Develop and maintain a good rapport with the congregation.

  • Provide congregational care and support, as needed or called upon (emergency phone, visitations, funerals, etc.).



  • Provide insight and guidance to the Executive Committee, Call Committee, Church Council and others in support of the transition to new senior leadership.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ordained minister with an advanced seminary degree (Lutheran tradition)

  • Senior Pastor experience including leading multiple Associate Pastors

  • Experience supporting churches in seasons of transition

  • Excellent preaching and teaching skills

  • Ability to relate with relevance and enthusiasm to a multi-generational congregation

  • Agree to lead in a manner that supports the current vision and direction
