Job Description:

ABOUT THE POSITION

Lavon Drive Baptist Church has a rich history of vibrant music, featuring a unique blend of styles, with a normal Sunday including a mix of traditional hymns and contemporary worship songs (e.g., Chris Tomlin, Lincoln Brewster).  As such, the applicant will need to be equally comfortable and proficient reading from sheet music and lead sheets/rhythm charts.  Our repertoire of choral/orchestral music runs the gamut from art song to urban gospel.  We utilize full choir and orchestra in all Sunday services along with smaller ensembles that are used for special events throughout the year.  Our music staff includes the Music Pastor, Ryan Johnston as well as Instrumental Director Scott Copeland.  Both are full-time positions.  We have been blessed with incredible talent on our music staff and are seeking a new pianist to join the team.  Our previous two pianists include Dove award-nominated composer/arranger Todd Billingsley as well as nationally-acclaimed and best-selling composer/arranger Heather Sorenson. Composition capabilities are not a requirement of the position but will certainly be considered.  This job requires experience and high levels of skill in both Congregational Worship and Accompaniment. These two areas require the pianist to be proficient in both reading and improvisation.  Considerable experience as a church pianist is a must.  Specific responsibilities include:

  • Sunday service pianist for 10:50am & 6:00pm worship services (each 75 minutes in length). Includes a Sunday morning sound check from 8:00 – 9:15am
  • Rehearsal pianist for choir rehearsals, Sundays from 4:15 – 5:45pm
  • 2 - 3 Saturday rehearsals annually in preparation for major productions
  • 5 weeknight evenings annually for Vacation Bible School
  • Average 7-10 hours/week, but negotiable according to the candidate's skills and ministry's needs

REQUIREMENTS

  • A genuine love for God and relationship with Jesus Christ
  • A passion for worship and the role that music plays as an expression of corporate and individual worship
  • Skills needed
    • Congregational Worship
      • Be highly proficient and have significant experience playing various congregational styles of music on a professional level: traditional, blended, contemporary
      • Be able to easily read and improvise from a lead sheet or chord chart
      • Be able to create a supportive congregational accompaniment from the hymnal vocal parts
      • Be able to create improvisatory underscores during sensitive portions of the service
      • Be able to modulate seamlessly between songs with different key signatures
      • Be able to confidently lead a rhythm section and provide instruction to instrumentalists as needed to enhance musicality
    • Accompaniment
      • Have strong accompaniment skills (as opposed to piano solo performance)
      • Be able to sight-read church anthem accompaniments
      • Be able to play vocal parts in rehearsal, as well as parts with light harmonic structure
      • Be able to run a choir rehearsal if the director is absent

ABOUT LAVON DRIVE’S MUSIC MINISTRY

Lavon Drive Baptist Church has a blended, piano-led, choir/orchestra-driven style that seeks to present the best music across multiple genres and generations for the purpose of glorifying the Lord, creating opportunities for lay participation in worship leadership, broadening the artistic palate of the congregation, and providing diverse opportunities for believers to worship the Lord in the corporate setting of the Sunday church service.  Two Sunday services are presented each week (10:50am & 6:00pm), and while each is unique in content, they are identical in style: choir and orchestra in both services presenting a combination of hymn arrangements, contemporary classics, and the latest praise and worship complemented with selections of Scripture readings, video, drama, solos, ensembles, and choral/orchestral anthems. The Music Ministry is comprised of a 50-voice adult choir, 20-piece orchestra, 60-member Praise Kids program (children’s worship arts, including singing, art, and drama), and 3-octave handbell ensemble, as well as numerous other small vocal and instrumental ensembles.  Paid Music Staff include Music Pastor (Ryan Johnston), Instrumental Director (Scott Copeland), and Pianist/Composer-in-residence (Todd Billingsley - outgoing).  The Music Ministry has hosted and performed alongside numerous special guests over the last decade, including David Phelps, Mark Lowry, Selah, Babbie Mason, Larnelle Harris, Greater Vision, the Singing Men of Texas and others.  The choir has performed Mozart’s Requiem with a festival chorus at Carnegie Hall, and has produced two CDs (Because We Believe and Jesus, What a Savior).
