Primary Purpose + Function

The Mars Hill Worship Pastor creates worship experiences that lead the Mars Hill community to understand and experience God in new ways. The essential activities include creating and leading worship experiences that enhance and complement teachings, in addition to developing and shepherding the worship team.

Qualifications + Experience

  • 5 years or more of proven experience in creating and leading worship experiences in large group settings
  • Ability to take music from basic chord structures to arranging it for multiple instruments or voices
  • Ability to lead and care for volunteers—both relationally and administratively
  • General understanding of the operational and technical [lighting, acoustics, visual display, and staging] aspects that must be translated into practical ways to support and complement creative content of large events
  • Passionate spirit for exploration, innovation, and change
  • Discernment, maturity, and ability to engage the Mars Hill community, using readings, music, Scripture, silence, and other avenues of worship in order to move others in fresh and inviting ways to a deeper understanding and experience of God
  • Ability to collaborate with Associate Pastor, Technical Director, and other key Sunday Team staff to create a worship experience that complements the vision for each service
  • Demonstrated flexibility and responsiveness to changes in direction for a service when needed
  • Ability to create vision, strategies, and goals for a team and manage people and programs in a way that ensures aims and objectives are met
  • Energy and self-initiative to create, produce, and lead with follow through and determination

  Specific Responsibilities

  1. Owning and Leading the Overall Vision for Worship at Mars Hill
  • Collaborating with the Lead and Associate Pastors to frame worship within the broader direction and mission of our community
  • Developing and communicating vision, mission, and direction for the Worship Team that aligns with the mission, vision, and strategies of Mars Hill and the Sunday Team
  • Discovering and implementing new ways of furthering our missional identity through worship or worship


  • Creating new ways of inviting our community into worship which combine contemplative traditions, innovative music or musical arrangements, readings, and Scripture
  • Communicate with visiting worship leaders/teams to establish and ensure consistency with the vision for the Mars Hill worship experience


  1. Leading the Planning and Execution of the Vision for Worship Experiences at Mars Hill
  • Working as part of the Sunday Team to dream about, plan for, and execute Sunday Gatherings with excellence
  • Leading worship 2-3 Sundays each month including arranging for and leading any rehearsals necessary to ensure excellence at a Sunday Gathering
  • Communicating with the Technical Director to ensure all necessary technical equipment is available for both rehearsals and the worship events
  • Planning and establishing the Sunday Gathering schedule for all volunteer worship team members
  • Ensuring that scheduled team members are informed and have the tools and resources required to fulfill their responsibilities


  1. Building Teams of Well-Trained, Informed, and Engaged Worship Team Volunteers
  • Recruiting, assessing skill levels, and placing individuals in roles and on teams according to their passions and abilities
  • Teaching, training, and providing adequate information and resources needed by team members to effectively serve as part of the worship team
  • Articulating the vision for worship experiences to members of the worship team at every possible opportunity, constantly inviting and challenging each person to be fully invested in the team
  • Acting as a bridge and conduit of communication between the Worship Team, the Sunday Team, and other Mars Hill leadership or staff as appropriate
  • Encouraging and shepherding volunteers through regular communication in small groups, one-on-one interactions, phone connections, written notes, and email


  1. Participating as a Team Member on the Sunday Team and as a Part of the Larger Mars Hill Team
  • Attending weekly Sunday Team meetings and Mars Hill team meetings as scheduled
  • Participating in ministry-wide events and activities as necessary [including but not limited to weddings, funerals, and community-wide events other than Sunday morning Gatherings] 
  • Assisting the Sunday Team with other tasks and projects under the direction of the Associate Pastor


5.         Participate as a Fully Invested Member of the Mars Hill Pastoral Team

  • Provide pastoral care, crisis management, crisis intervention, and resource connection
  • Anticipate and respond to the crisis and care needs of those in your care
  • Carry out pastoral responsibilities [as needed] such as: weddings, funerals, child dedication services,   

   Baptisms, pastoral appointments, visitations, mentoring, Sunday care, and on-call responsibilities  

   [approximately 5-7 days/year]

  • Availability and presence on Sunday mornings, providing proactive and responsive care
  • Train other staff and volunteer pastors in a specific area of expertise

                                                Office Hours:         Sundays: 7:30am-1pm and 5-8pm
