Job Summary:

The Director of Children’s & Family Ministries is an essential element of our Age-Related Ministry Team, who reports directly to the Lead Pastor.  This person must be a well-organized leader able to handle multiple projects while maintaining grace and understanding toward the families who participate in different children’s programs throughout the year.

 

This position combines many needed strengths: the candidate must not only be well-organized, but also energetic, enthusiastic, and a creative fund-raiser with excellent communication skills across all economic, racial, age, theological, and orientation boundaries.  The ability to plan programs and events one year in advance and calendar these in coordination with other Age-Related and Administrative staff is required.  The incumbent must be proactive in anticipating, planning, and shepherding weekly, monthly, and seasonal functions of the various age-level ministries as a leader.  The applicant should be open to new ideas and continually research new ways to teach and enlighten children in our faith and be able to fulfill this assignment in a creative way while staying within budget.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Recruiting, training, supporting, and evaluating Sunday school teachers and substitutes for the 10 am traditional sanctuary service and the 11:15 contemporary service.  Sunday and evening attendance is required.
  • Hiring and training employed childcare workers who sign up for openings on a provided monthly schedule to assist in the care of infant through kindergarten children
  • Working closely with the Program Support Specialist conveying all job requests in a clear and timely manner
  • Establishing good working relationships with people at all levels of the staff, building appropriate rapport and setting appropriate boundaries
  • Managing, delegating, and executing yearly programs, including the following tasks but not limited to:
  • Organizing and directing employed and volunteer persons in the Christmas Pageant production
  • Planning curriculum, recruiting and managing volunteers, and raising funds
  • Planning and organizing annual children’s activities at church events
  • Preparing an annual budget and overseeing its distribution
  • Providing leadership and support to age-related ministries and the onsite MCUM preschool
  • Making hospital visits to families of new babies and attending other family functions such as 1st Communions, school plays, graduations, and more
  • Maintaining and ensuring implementation of child protection policy
  • Attending regular meetings and retreats

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree, preferably in related field
  • Experience and professional training in areas such as childhood development and Christian education, which emphasize time and personnel management
  • Personal discretion and reliability in the management of confidential, sensitive information
  • Demonstrable proficiency in writing, editing, and desktop publishing (Microsoft Office)
  • Comfortable managing multiple projects
  • Capable of handling difficult or emergency situations in a calm and sensible manner
  • Able to speak comfortably in public to both small and large groups
  • Knowledge and support of basic United Methodist beliefs and principles
