Job Description:

Newtown Square Presbyterian Church (NSPC) is a 300+ member church in a southwestern suburb of Philadelphia in Delaware County. Over 70 new members have joined the congregation during the last five years, including many young families. We are seeking an energetic, creative, and talented individual to direct our comprehensive music program. Our current music ministry includes a volunteer choir, paid quartet, praise team, children’s choir, and bell choir. NSPC values its strong tradition of music excellence.

The candidate(s) should demonstrate a heart for ministry, leadership, an ability to teach, and a passion for music and its importance in the life of a community of faith.  



  • Formal music training and a B.S. degree in Music or equivalent training and experience.
  • Experience in choral conducting.
  • Skilled in playing the organ and piano.
  • Skilled as an accompanist for congregational singing, choir, and soloists.
  • Knowledge of all styles of sacred music from classical to contemporary.
  • A spirit of collaboration with the pastor/head of staff, other staff members, and the Worship Commission.
  • The ability to choose music that enhances worship, as well as to incorporate different sacred musical genres.
  • The ability to teach people with varying degrees of musical knowledge.
  • The desire and ability to build on an established tradition of music excellence in the church.
  • The desire and ability to participate fully in the life of a growing church.
  • A personal, growing relationship with Jesus Christ.


  • Play organ for all weekly (10:00 AM) and special worship services.
  • Play piano as needed.
  • Rehearse and direct an adult choir, bell choir, and children’s choir; and direct or co-direct a praise team.
  • Provide and perform music for additional musical services and offerings outside of the regular church service times, including two Christmas Eve services and a Maundy Thursday service.
  • Engage the community in additional musical offerings, in collaboration with the Session of the church.
  • Select and purchase music for worship (anthems, preludes, and postludes) and for all church musical groups.
  • Secure additional instrumentalists for Easter and Christmas Eve services.
  • Maintain keyboard instruments and bells.
  • Be available for weddings and funerals (additional compensation is provided for these services).
  • Secure substitute organists and other musicians when necessary.


  • This is a 3/4-time position, 30 to 35 hours/week. The salary range is $40,000 to $50,000, ­­­­commensurate with education and experience.

We have an Allen digital computer organ that features 110 ranks and 95 speaking stops and a Yamaha baby grand piano. They are the primary instruments used for worship.
