Job Description:

Overarching Purpose:

The role of the Executive Pastor is to help align the efforts of staff, lay leaders, and operational processes toward a shared vision, in order to best live out Suburban’s mission.

 

Essential job functions:

This role does that in three main ways: by directly overseeing the operational and administrative functions of the church, by helping to develop and implement the strategic planning process, and by providing leadership and direction to staff with an emphasis on helping staff members grow personally and professionally as they identify, equip, and empower lay leaders.


1.       Operations/Administration:  Oversee and execute the administration of the church through appropriate staff, volunteer leaders and teams, and consultants (as needed).  Ensure the completion of business, facility, and logistical support functions through staff and volunteers.

  1. Serve as the chief financial officer – providing oversight and direction in the financial functions of the church, including:  cash flow, contributions, insurance, banking and financing, accounts payable, payroll, leases, budget planning and oversight.  Provide leadership and supervision for any staff and volunteers in this area.
  2. Supervise the church administrative staff and provide direction, as needed, for the effective functioning of the office support functions and structures.
  3. Supervise the church’s facility staff and serve as a resource to them in all matters relating to facilities issues, dealing with contractors, and budgeting.
  4. Oversee the effective functioning and maintenance of computer, information and communication systems through the efforts of volunteers, paid tech consultants, and/or staff.

 

2.       Strategic Leadership and Planning: 

  1. Serve as a partner to develop and implement the vision established by the Senior Pastor and Elders.  The Executive Minister will be responsible for creating the work plans through staff and volunteers necessary to accomplish the strategies of the vision that is developed.
  2. Proactively assist ministry leaders and staff by aiding in planning, budgeting, resourcing, conflict resolution and other needs as appropriate. Help staff focus on identifying, equipping, and empowering the volunteers they need to do ministry effectively and sustainably.
  3. Lead staff and ministry leaders in the development of an annual plan that is based on the strategic goals and objectives set by the Senior Pastor and Elders.
  4. Lead staff and ministry leaders in the development of an annual church budget and monitors the budget implementation and the financial status of the church during the budget year.  The budget is to be developed to fit the constraints set by the elders and is to be presented to the elders for approval and then to the congregation for its approval.

 

 3.       Staff Supervision and Oversight: 

  1. Helps provide leadership to the staff by participating on the Executive Team, helping monitor the effectiveness of the current organizational structure, and participating in designing and transitioning to new organizational structures as needed.
  2. Supervises staff as assigned.
  3. Responsibilities for staff supervised:
  4. Assists each staff member in goal-setting, planning, prioritizing, and ministry implementation. Works to empower staff to be effective in leading their ministry areas.
  5. Responsible for annual performance reviews for direct reports and ensures other leadership completes performance reviews for their staff.
  6. Helps each staff member function at a high level of proficiency.
  7. Works with each staff member to set professional and personal development goals with an emphasis on identifying, equipping, and empowering lay volunteers.
  8. Approves vacation and other time off for the staff members, working with the Senior Minister to balance time off requests with the needs of the church and requests of other staff members.

 

 

Reporting

The Executive Minister reports to the Senior Pastor.  His or her performance will be reviewed at least annually by the Sr Pastor. The Executive Pastor will also help provide information to the Elders each month that helps them gauge the church’s effectiveness in mission. This position will, when requested, attend Elders meetings as a non-voting member.

 

Administrative policies

The Executive Minister shall adhere to the administrative policies of Suburban Christian Church, including the Intellectual Properties policies.

 

Qualifications:

Demonstrated gifts, training and experience in administrative processes.

Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic plans, foster teamwork, train and supervise staff, and execute programs around allocated resources.

Proven track record of effective leadership, judgment, financial acumen and significant understanding and experience in church leadership.

A degree in an associated field is preferred, with at least 10 years of experience in an administrative position with oversight responsibilities.
