Job Description:

The role of the Executive Pastor is to ensure that the strategic ministry objectives of the church are effectively and efficiently attained. Working closely with the Teaching Pastor and Community Pastor, he will lead and equip the staff and volunteers to implement vision and carry out the mission. The Executive Pastor reports to the Elder Council.

 

The Executive Pastor will operate in four key areas:

1. Chief of Staff

  • Oversee the hiring, training, and evaluation of the staff
  • Lead weekly staff meetings and other activities designed to clarify and execute church goals
  • Conduct monthly direct face-to-face status updates/evaluations with all ministry leaders

 

2. Strategic Planning and Leadership

  • Lead the Elder Council in strategic planning, and maintain responsibility for its implementation
  • Ensure staffing, facilities and programs are appropriately aligned to best meet church goals
  • Oversee and coordinate the preparation of annual ministry plans by the ministry leaders
  • Monitor the pulse of the congregation through research and evaluation

 

3. Elder

  • Serve as an elder on the Elder Council
  • Be a conduit of communication between the Elder Council and the staff and ministry leaders
  • Responsible for Elder retreats--organizing, facilitating and following up
  • Responsible for Elder meetings--setting agenda, facilitating, and keeping records

 

4. Administration Oversight

  • Give oversight to the Finance Team for administration of the financial functions of the church, including: cash flow, annual budget preparation, contributions, insurance, banking and financing, payroll, leases, budget planning and oversight
  • Give oversight to the Personnel Team for human resource management issues
  • Oversee the negotiation of insurance and other staff benefits, etc
  • Give oversight to operation of computer, information and communication systems
  • Development, documentation, and adherence to church policies and procedures

 

Personal Qualifications

  • Must be elder-qualified as defined in 1Timothy 3 and Titus 1
  • Administrative and organizational skills—able to think in systems and structures
  • Interpersonal skills—able to communicate effectively in writing and orally
  • Understand group dynamics—able to build consensus among varying personality types
  • Solid biblical/theological convictions which are aligned with that of The Mount

 

Education and Experience

  • An appropriate educational background (bachelors degree or equivalent work experience)
  • Sufficient experience on a senior leadership team within a medium to large organization or church context that reveals skills necessary for this role
