Job Description:

The Associate Pastor of Student Ministry will lead team-oriented ministry that is committed to leading the young people of our multi-campus, multi-city church in the adventure of becoming like Christ.  He will be a “player/coach”; as a coach managing a team of Campus Directors and as a player directing one campus.   He will develop and lead volunteers on a daily basis to promote unity amongst campus programming while looking toward community specific adaptability.  He will implement creative and engaging discipleship programs where teens and young adults join in the mission of leading people in the adventure of becoming like Christ alongside a combination of directors and volunteers at each of our current and future campus locations.

 

Expectations:

  1. This person must have made a personal commitment to Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and must demonstrate the reality of that relationship through their life and testimony.

  2. Live committed to our mission of “Leading people in the adventure of becoming like Christ” by personally practicing the 5B’s and striving towards Christlikeness as described in the six Core Christlike Characteristics and summarized by Loving God, Loving People and Living Surrendered.

  3. Must have a love for, and pastoral heart for, students and their families.

  4. Maintain a bold commitment to excellence through attention to detail that ensures the highest possible standards in student ministry

  5. Participate in all scheduled staff meetings and staff development times.

  6. Meet with the Executive Pastor and other staff for department planning and evaluation.

  7. Assist the other pastors in providing care to the congregation.

  8. Abide by the Open Door employee handbook including staff team values.

  9. Create, develop and lead volunteer teams to advance student ministry

  10. The Associate Pastor of Student Ministry must be a gifted communicator who relates to teens and young people with love and grace and has a heart for shepherding parents.

  11. Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Pastor and Senior Pastor.

 

General Responsibilities: The Associate Pastor of Student Ministry is responsible for:

  1. Effectively recruiting, training, motivating, and developing teams of adult and teen volunteers including support systems; 

  2. Development and implementation of creative, exciting, relevant and professional student ministry programs and environments; 

  3. Translating the broader church mission into the language of today’s youth; 

  4. Providing a safe and secure environment where teens and young adults are free to grow in loving God, loving people, and living surrendered; and 

  5. Engaging and cooperating with a large church staff in the pursuit of excellence in the development and execution of an all-church mission.

  6. Leading the team of campus Student Ministries Directors


Detailed responsibilities:

Church of the Open Door Wide Responsibilities:

  1. Set direction of student ministry in alignment with Church Mission and Methodology

  2. Continually develop weekend and midweek evening programs for teens and young adults.

  3. Lead and develop student ministry teams and supporting systems for all campus locations.

  4. When available, manage and fully utilize an assistant to complete administrative tasks including attendance records, lesson preparation, and communication to volunteer staff.

  5. Coordinate a student ministry and experiences within a multi-campus/venue context

  6. Facilitate family awareness of and participation in the student ministry.

  7. Recruit, disciple, schedule, develop, and mentor volunteer leaders and parent chaperones.

  8. Develop and lead a core team that fosters good communication and a strong sense of community participate on the Service Design Team for weekly planning and production of thematically integrated services.

  9. Participate in all scheduled staff meetings and staff development times.

  10. Create and implement an annual ministry plan and budget.

  11. Willing to serve as needed in other areas of ministry as part of the Open Door staff team.

  12. Plan, develop, and lead student mission teams both domestically and globally.  

  13. Plan, develop, and lead student retreats

 

Elyria Campus Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Lead Sunday and Wednesday Programming

    1. Teaching preparation (Able to teach the scriptures directing students to Christ through thoughtful illustrations and preparedness)

    2. Point person for Campus Student Ministry (known by parents and students)

    3. Responsible to organize teaching, worship, LifeGroups, games, etc.

    4. Responsible for keeping track of students and leaders (taking attendance and directing follow up where needed)

  2. Volunteer Team Coordination

    1. Encourage, lead, and develop team (be their “go to” person)

    2. Work with campus pastor, who will help identify leaders, to build volunteer team

    3. Chaperones (usually parents helping with snacks, driving, clean up, etc.)

    4. Workers (help with games, worship tech, love students)

    5. LifeGroup leaders (shepherds of LifeGroups and disciple makers)

    6. Teachers (handling the Word of God)

  3. Student/Coach/Volunteer Contacting

    1. Develop relationships and connections with students at your campus

    2. Meet with students and leaders outside of Sundays and Wednesdays (at least one per week)

    3. Address specific student needs at your campus

 

Competencies:

  1. A track record of significant impact and effectiveness as a youth pastor.  

  2. Can both lead and thrive in a team-based environment.

  3. Teachable, responsive, and respectful of authority.

  4. Has a Pastoral presence with families and teens, having the ability and willingness to engage and minister to families and teens.

  5. Able to create and sustain a strong volunteer culture.

  6. Ability to creatively and effectively teach to large groups of teens and young adults. 

  7. Able to effectively speak to large groups of adults ie: parent meetings, volunteer meetings and Sunday morning services.

  8. Growing knowledge and appreciation for students ministry methodology. Up on the latest trends and new resources in student ministry.

 

Qualification:       

  1. Bachelor’s degree required

  2. Seminary or Bible College training is desired

  3. A mature, growing believer with a clear understanding of the Gospel, along with the ability to clearly communicate it.

  4. Committed to spiritual integrity, ministry excellence and a fierce work ethic.

  5. In agreement with and committed to our vision, mission, values and doctrine.

  6. Visionary and team-oriented leader of volunteers

  7. Passionate about creating exciting and creative programs for teens and young adults.

  8. At least 5 years of measurable success directing Student Ministry

 

Compensation:

This is a full-time salaried position with benefits package. Compensation is established by qualifications and experience.

 

Work Schedule:

Approximately 45-50 Hours Monday – Thursday and Sundays.  The above responsibilities are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. The staff at Open Door is committed to team ministry that pursues excellence with an attitude of “whatever it takes to get the job done”.  Therefore, additional time may be required outside of typical work hours and normal schedules.
