About the Location:

Soulful Memphis is an interesting and vivid place, located along the Mississippi River at the Arkansas border. The largest city in Tennessee, Memphis has a history of dramatic transformations: antebellum cotton-trading prosperity, Civil War destruction and reconstruction, resurgence as a lumber and cotton-trading center. Today the city is on an upswing, attributed to recognition of its unique cultural assets and urban renewal.

The economic base is diverse and its status as a good business base is on the rise. Memphis is known as “America's Distribution Center,” serving the northeast, southeast, and southwest regions of the country. The city has one of the country's largest inland ports and is the national headquarters for the Fed Ex air-courier company. Health care and related activities such as medical education and biomedical research are Memphis's largest industries, bringing over $5 billion a year to the local economy.

Healthcare resources are strong, in particular the well-known St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Methodist La Bonheur Children’s Hospital. There are a few specialized small colleges, and good K-12 schools, with a cost of living that is fairly low for a large city, at 26% below national average. As the hometown of the blues and Elvis Presley, the city left its mark on the history of music. Sites of interest for tourists and residents include Graceland, the former home of Elvis Presley, Pink Palace Museum, National Civil Rights Museum, Mud Island River Park and a number of notable parks and cemeteries, including Shelby Farms, one of the largest urban parks in the United States. Check out for more insight about this great city.
