Job Overview:

The principal function of the Associate Pastor is to provide support to the Lead Pastor, providing assistance with teaching, preaching, spiritual formation, disciple-making as well as with staff and leader development. 

 

Personal Skills:

  1. Teacher/Preacher—the Pastor will be an effective teacher who communicates the grace and truth of God’s word, both topically and expositionally.
  2. Leadership—the Pastor will be able to lead in a variety of contexts (individual, small groups, large groups) in such a way that Jesus Christ and his gospel are central. He should be a self-starter, an initiative-taker and be willing to serve in a greater capacity as needed.
  3. Relational—the Pastor will have a heart to care for people, not just manage systems; that drive should manifest itself in the appropriation of time.
  4. Team Player—the Pastor will work together with staff, both paid and volunteer.  The Pastor will communicate openly and effectively with those he works with. 
  5. Vision Caster- implement, articulate, and execute SACC’s vision.

 

 

Responsibilities:

Executive Leadership and Mentorship: 

  • Provide an executive mindset that encourages staff and develops leaders.
  • Continue to develop the Men’s Ministries Program which includes weekly Prayer Breakfasts and Bible Studies as well as regular Men’s events.
  • Direct, coordinate and manage our Adult Ministries including facilitators and curriculum choices.
  • Develop a Spiritual Formation plan for the Adults of the church. This to include a plan for moving people from non-believer to mature believer status.
  • Teach, and help preach; to develop people into fully devoted disciple-makers of Christ. He will be a part of the regular preaching /teaching team, initially 30-40% of the weekend teaching time.
  • He will help with long term sermon planning, and Weekend service design.  
  • Share in pastoral care such as weddings, funerals, visitation and pastoral counseling.
  • Integrally involved in any new building project or church plant.
  • Oversee and continue to develop Life Groups which is our small group ministry.
  • Integral involvement in setting vision, mission, direction and development for church.
  • Other Duties as assigned by Lead Pastor. 

Qualifications/Preferences:

  • The most important qualification this person must possess is an evidence of a growing and deepening relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • Spends time in prayer, believing one can only give to others what one has received from the Lord.
  • Life evidences the fruits of the Spirit.
  • Possesses a heart of thankfulness for what God has done for them personally.
  • Possesses a desire to be a good, positive example both in worship and in daily life.
  • Possesses exceptional leadership and administrative abilities.
  • Possesses the ministry skills, gift mix and desire to potentially become a Lead Pastor at some point in the future.
  • Has a proven track record of initiating new ideas and developing strategic programs for ministry in a local church.  This experience should reflect the vision of our church; in creating a ministry that in effect could reach our entire city.  Be committed to the church philosophy and work within the framework of SACC’s policies, vision and doctrine as well as those of the Denomination of the Evangelical Church of North America. 
  • Possesses a personal philosophy of ministry, worship and church music which is compatible with the rest of the staff and with the church; ability to remain loyal to the team and leadership. 
  • Can demonstrate an ability to build, develop and manage effective teams. Able to contribute to, articulate, support and implement SACC’s vision.
  • Life reflects the character qualities of a Biblical elder. 1Timothy 3 and Titus 1.
  • Has a minimum of 5 years of full-time experience in local church ministry.
  • Prefer a M.Div. degree or Masters level training with a church related emphasis.
  • Has been ordained or is willing to be ordained /credentialed by the Evangelical Church of North America within two to three years of accepting this position.
  • Preference given for:
  • a thorough understanding of Sonlife principles and strategies.
  • knowledge and experience with Community Church Builder and or another church database system.
  • ministry experience in churches larger than ours in a similar capacity. 

Accountability:

The Associate Pastor is accountable to the Senior Pastor.

 

This person will be expected to be a team player, is accountable to build unity with the existing staff and to be in alignment with the culture and direction of SACC.

The church website provides information about South Albany Community Church and will explain our overall purpose, programs and even a bit of the culture of our church. Of specific interest would be:

1.  Under “Connect” you can learn about the doctrine of the church and current staff, etc.   Because of the teaching nature of this position it will be essential that there is unity with the doctrine of South Albany Community Church,  Evangelical Church of North America  , and the Pacific Conference of the Evangelical Church.  

2.  In “Sermons Online” or our “Vimeo feed” you will find sermons given at SACC. Because the Associate Pastor of Spiritual Formation will be working so closely with our Lead pastor, Jim Saemenes, it would be beneficial to be familiar with and feel comfortable with his teaching.

 

Financial Arrangements

The Pastor-Parish Team oversees the salaries of the South Albany Community Church Staff.  It is SACC’s desire that staff compensation will motivate our paid staff to minister to the best of their ability and be content with their pay status. (1 Corinthians 9:10-14; 1 Timothy 5:17-18; 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13).

The annual salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience and education.  This salary can be broken up as salary and housing allowance to fit the pastor's situation and for his optimum living and tax advantage.
