Youth Pastor - Gardendale, AL
Our congregation, an evangelical United Methodist Church, is poised for significant growth not only within our youth group, but across our church as a whole. Gardendale-Mt. Vernon UMC presents a great opportunity for a Youth Pastor who seeks to lead an emerging, well-prepared, resilient group of young people who have been nurtured by a long-standing, Christ-centered Children’s Leader. Our youth group comes with a strong supporting cast of parents and committed volunteers understand and demonstrate the importance of relationships in ministry.
As Youth Pastor, you’ll lead by carrying out our church’s prayerfully-designed vision through our very special group of young people. Serving at Gardendale-Mt. Effective ministry at Gardendale Mt. Vernon should produce the following Results:
Result #1 Spiritual Formation and Disciple Making.
Junior High and Senior High youth have been spiritually led in a way that promotes not only personal spiritual formation but also disciple making. The mission of the youth ministry should reflect the mission of Gardendale Mt. Vernon UMC, Love God, Love Others, and Serve the World.
Result #2 Volunteer Participation and Leadership
All youth ministry regular programming, activities, and special events are resourced with volunteer leadership other than but also including youth staff. (This of course is program, activity, or special event specific.)
Result #3 Major Events and Weekly Program
Planning and promotion of all major events and weekly programming has taken place in such a way that the targeted number of youth participated.
Result #4 Relationship, Relationship, Relationship!!!
An understanding of and evidence that relationship is central to Christ centered ministry. Solid and Christ Centered relationships established with youth volunteers and students.
Result #5 Knowing Them
An ongoing process of learning the names, interests, likes and dislikes of students is evident.
Result #6 Contact
Someone in youth leadership, volunteer or staff, has contacted every youth associated in the youth ministry at least once per quarter.
Result #7 Extracurricular Activities
The Youth Director is visible at some events in the lives of the Students. (Sports, Choir, Band, etc…)
Result #8 Setting Up Leadership and Volunteers
All weekly youth ministry volunteers have been recruited and assigned no later than one month prior to service.
Result #9 Individual Growth and Equipping
The youth Director meets personally with each youth ministry volunteer for mutual evaluation at least once per year.
Result #10 Team Building
The Youth Director meets at least quarterly with entire youth volunteer team for evaluation, planning, and prayer.
Result #11 Clear Plans and Accountability
The Youth director has met monthly with the youth ministry Design Team for implementation of the ministry plan.
Result #12 Control Documents
Control Documents have been created for every aspect of youth ministry. For example; youth calendar, youth directory, event guidelines, registration forms, etc.
Result #13 Compliance
Compliance documents are updated at least annually. Background checks for volunteers and staff, etc.
Result #14 Safe Sanctuary
Every youth program, service, activity, or event is Safe Sanctuary compliant. Safe Sanctuary is a Denominational and Church Policy for protecting children and volunteers.
Result #15 Communication
Communication is coordinated through Youth Ministry Communications Coordinator (volunteer or staff). Parents have been contacted consistently about what is happening in youth ministry. Students are contacted often by youth ministry representative.
Result #16 Social Media
Youth director has established (in coordination with Communications Coordinator) a social media presence for the purpose of building relationship with students. This responsibility is outside the expectation of keeping students up to date on ministry activities.
Result #17 Staff Communication
The church staff especially the Senior Pastor have been informed of the progress of youth ministry.
Result #18 Sunday School
An energetic and dynamic Sunday School program has been established for grades 7 – 12.
Result #19 Healthy Atmosphere for Ministry
A covenant for healthy conflict management, based on Matthew 18, has been drafted and signed by all youth ministry volunteers and staff. A culture of “speaking it like it is IN LOVE” is continually nurtured.
Result #20 Tribes (Accountability and Community)
Students have been encouraged to join a Tribe (small group) and Tribe leaders have been assisted and resourced to meet the goal of facilitating Christian community.
Result #21 Other Duties
The Youth Director has made himself or herself available for assignments other than youth ministry on an as needed basis and as directed by the Senior Pastor. There is a clear understanding that while the Youth Director may occasionally participate in various church activities outside of youth ministry, his or her role in those activities is that of service, not lead. In other words, the youth director won’t be expected to lead “a craft fair” because no one else wants to.
Result #22 Team Player
The youth director has made it obvious to the entire church staff that he or she is a team player.
Result #23 Mission First
The youth director has led the ministry based upon his or her specific calling while working within the parameters set by the Design Team.
Result #24 Resources
An annual budget is prepared with youth ministry coordinator and reviewed by the design team.
Result #25 Youth Leadership
Foster and develop leadership among students.
· A strong desire to follow Jesus more tomorrow than you did today.
· A strong desire to lead others into following Jesus more each day.
· An ability to communicate the Gospel effectively.
· An ability to share leadership.
· Above average proficiency in social media or willingness to learn and apply.
· Strong communication skills with students and families.
· Musical ability or worship leadership experience is a plus. (not required)
· Ability to recruit and lead adult volunteers.
· A Bachelor’s Degree is preferred. If degree is ministry related, that’s a plus.
· A track record of proven effective youth ministry is preferable.
