Shortly after the town of Jonesboro was established in 1859, a collective group of Methodists began to have services in the Court House and a local church in the city. Through this endeavor emerged the first Methodist Church in 1885. As the town and congregation grew, the church purchased the land in its surrounding region and held its first official service in 1926, while the building was in progress.


The vision of those early members is evident in the size and beauty of the structure at First United Methodist Church. Its size has made it possible for the membership to grow, and for the church to consistently increase its outreach and ministry to its members and the community at large. Today, First UMC is a large and thriving church of over 1,100 in worship with over 600 in small groups. Its largest service is held in the contemporary worship center, which averages over 600 each Sunday. 


The Youth Minister of First United Methodist Church will maintain spiritual and operational oversight of the Youth Ministry, Grades 7-12. This individual will possess a consistent devotional life, including a strong sense of leadership with the skills necessary to scale. They will be responsible for steering the leadership, vision, and strategy of a growing the Youth Ministry at FUMC. This position will focus on both the discipleship and evangelistic growth of the ministry, and seamlessly integrate it with the vision of the church.


Success in this position will be determined by:


  • Attractional value added to the Youth Ministry and its programming components.
  • Students engaged, learning, and living it through their lives.
  • Substantial spiritual development evidenced among students of the ministry.
  • Increased numerical growth among students and volunteer base.
  • Achieved and exceeded expectations in terms of momentum, drive, and vision.


A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution alongside 3-5 years of experience in Youth Ministry will be imperative to this role. Additionally, the successful candidate will have the ability to epitomize the character attributes of integrity, enthusiasm, optimism, courtesy, flexibility, gratitude, humor, resolve, kindness, self-control, perseverance, punctuality, emotional stability, and objectivity in all areas of responsibility.
