Ranked one of the Best Places to Live in Money Magazine (2007), Hernando is a town that offers an old style charm to new ways of living. It is located in one of the fastest growing counties in the country, and simply a few miles from Memphis. The population of the city is approximately 15,000, with a racial distribution of 85% White, 11% Black, and 4% collectively representing other categories. The median income is in the $60,000 to $62,000 range, which is higher than national average. There are roughly 10,500 business establishments in Hernando's DeSoto County, with fewer than 10 employees, which is a good indicator of the entrepreneurship in the community. Its industrial sector and education standards are growing, and thriving across each profession and institution. Hernando consists of many opportunities to stay healthy, as the community leaders are committed to making it a high priority. For this reason, Hernando was the first city to receive the Healthiest Hometown award from Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation.
