Statement of Understanding


Introduction:

This full-time position is part of the Pastoral Leadership Team of First Mennonite Church of Morton, Illinois.

The Pastor of Family Life shall serve as the advocate for the multi-generational ministry of the church in partnership with the Senior Pastor. This person will oversee the disciple-making systems from cradle to college and to their parents.

The Pastor of Family Life shall carry out these responsibilities under the direction of the Senior Pastor and the Board of Elders in a manner that is biblically inspired and consistent with the Confession of Faith in a Mennonite Perspective (1995).

 

Ministry Responsibilities:

  1. Model a disciple-making way of life within your own family and invite families to learn with you.
  2. Equip parents, teachers and all leaders of children (cradle through college-age) to model a disciple-making culture in the home and in the life of the congregation.
  3. Provide vision and direction for the volunteer leaders who oversee the children, youth and college age ministries in partnership with the Nurture Commission.
  4. Work jointly with the Chair of Nurture and the Senior Pastor to cast vision and direction to the entire disciple-making culture of FMC.
  5. Seek out intentional opportunities to equip children, youth, college-age, and parents to live as active disciples of Jesus Christ. (Examples may include, but are not limited to: workshops, parent coaching, family retreats, family service projects, rites-of-passage events, conferences, etc.)
  6. Provide family directed pastoral care and/or coaching (as appropriate and in conjunction with the Senior Pastor).
  7. Ensure that training materials (Pre-K through college-age) are age appropriate, theologically sound and clearly match the vision of FMC.
  8. Encourage intergenerational gatherings to celebrate how God is working among the believers of First Mennonite Church.
  9. Serve as an advocate for family ministry before staff, elders, church board and congregation.
  10. Interview/screen all volunteer leaders for Pre-K through college-age.
  11. Keep current on innovations and cultural trends that affect children, student and family ministries.

 

Minimum Requirements:

• 7+ years of ministry experience that include working closely with families, children and teens

• Strong relational and team building skills which resemble Jesus-like leadership

• Strong presentation and Bible-based teaching skills

• Proven leadership with relational counseling

• Agreement with The Confession of Faith in a Mennonite Perspective (1995)
