Job Type:
Hope Community Church
Job Description:

We at Hope Community Church believe the church should be a caring place where God transforms lives. This includes the lives of all of those within our close reach and most certainly those outside of the church walls. We are not only the light of the world but also the hands and feet of Jesus, each one of us called to use our gifts to serve, worship, and know Him.

Hope is an increasingly diverse congregation of 150 people, who are characterized by a strong sense of unity, love, and service. Some of our distinguishing features include the youth (from birth to age 18), who make up one-third of the congregation, the high level of adult participation (approximately two-thirds) in small groups and Bible studies where we live life deeply together and study God’s word), and a number of our families who have adopted or fostered children (both internationally and domestically). Significantly, we also have students, teachers, and school board members among us who are actively involved at the high school of 1,000 students that is located directly next to our church.

Based on what God has given us and with whom He has surrounded us, Hope's vision is to increasingly lead and feed its own with the aim of empowering God’s people to live the gospel out loud within our own families and communities. As we see Jesus, we desire to engage students of all ages with God's truth, to strengthen marriages and families in God's ways, and to care for the orphan both locally and internationally with God's compassion.

Hope is also unique in its model. The church is elder-ruled with the board of elders taking care to consider the congregation’s desires and concerns as they prayerfully make all key decisions in unanimity.  Additionally, we believe all members are ministers and ministry is best accomplished together. Therefore, Hope is team-based in virtually all of its efforts and is blessed to have many who serve using their gifts.

Moving forward, it is our desire to lead and feed the people, who are the real ministers of the church. Therefore, Hope is prayerfully seeking a full-time pastor who will also serve as an elder.  The pastor must be a devoted Christ-follower, Spirit-led servant leader, gifted preacher, intentional disciple maker, a lover of people over programs, and a mobilizer of teams that utilize the members’ God-given gifts.  It is also important that the pastor is aligned with our core values, vision, and elder-ruled model, and agrees with the importance of being culturally relevant and doctrinally pure.

The pastor will have a set of responsibilities that includes the following:

  • Primary leader among the plurality of existing leaders.  Provide pastoral care to and shepherding of the other elders even as the other elders are providing the same unto him.  Serve as an elder together with the other elders in:
  • leading the church
  • praying for, caring for, and equipping the people of the church
  • mobilizing ministry teams that utilize the members’ God-given gifts
  • providing oversight, encouragement and accountability to the ministry teams.

  • Lead the Preaching Team comprised of other gifted members who share the Sunday morning preaching responsibilities. Plan the upcoming sermon series, decide together with the elders who would preach each message, and equip the team members to develop their preaching gift.  Preach as much as half of the time based on gifting, interest, and priorities.

  • Provide oversight to the small group and Bible study leaders. Equip the leaders as they encourage their groups to walk hard after Christ and to live life deeply together.

  • Disciple the existing full time youth leader to (i) lead the youth ministry team and (ii) disciple and love the students in the group. Collaborate with the youth leader on initiatives to serve and reach out to both the students and their families at the local high school.

Hope Community Church of Willow Grove (www.hccwg.org) is an independent, non-denominational church started in the 1980's and modeled after Gene Getz's Sharpening the Focus of the Church. Hope is a member of the Willow Creek Association and has been influenced by its core values, leaders, and training. We strive to be a caring place where God transforms lives.
