Job Description:

PURPOSE: Develop and maintain a music program which is in keeping with the wishes, needs and resources of the congregation and Church Council. The Director of Music shall serve as organist and choir director for traditional worship services and coordinate with the music leader(s) of contemporary worship services.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY: Reports to the Pastor as Head of Staff. Direction and guidelines for the music ministries are provided by the Church Council and its Worship & Music Committee.

 

HOURS OF WORK: This is a part-time position of 10 hours per week. The hours will be spent handling duties set forth below.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate for this position shall be a devoted servant of Jesus Christ with a deep desire to see that God is glorified, the Gospel proclaimed, and the love of Christ is shared through music. The candidate must:

  • Have a minimum of three years of experience as a church organist and/or a degree in music;
  • Be familiar with (or willing to learn) the Lutheran liturgy;
  • Demonstrate effective leadership and organizational skills;
  • Possess good judgment, sound integrity, and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality; and
  • Be a supportive team member and work well with adults and children of all ages.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.        Plan, prepare, and play organ music for services of worship that is appropriate to the theme of each service. Worship services include: Sunday traditional worship services, midweek services during Lent, Holy Week and Christmas Eve, and other special services and programs as determined by the Church Council.

2.       Coordinate and conduct all present and future choirs and instrumental ensembles for the traditional worship services and special services and programs, including selection and accompaniment of special anthems during worship services.

3.       Enhance the music ministries by recruiting members for all music program activities and encouraging them to see their ministry as worship leadership and the glorification of God.

4.       Prepare and play music for funerals and memorial services when available and for wedding services as contracted by the family and approved by the Worship and Music Committee and Pastor.

5.       Approve all other instrumental musicians to play at these services.

6.       Write articles as needed for the monthly newsletter to share information about music ministries with the congregation.

7.       Work closely with the Pastor and Church Council, and attend meetings of the Worship & Music Committee.

8.       Arrange for the tuning and maintenance of the organ and all musical instruments on church premises, and report all special needs to the Worship & Music Committee.

9.       Organize, inventory, and maintain a library of music and supplies within budget.

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Performance and compensation is reviewed annually by the Pastor and Church Council. Additional payment for weddings is made by the family requesting the music.

This contract position includes paid absences for four (4) worship days. These absences cannot be cumulative and excludes services for major festivals as determined by the Pastor and Church Council. Other benefits are not provided.

Thirty (30) days written notice is required to terminate employment.
