Tremont Temple Baptist Church (TTBC) seeks nominations and applications for a Senior Pastor. Our church is located in the heart of downtown Boston. Founded in 1839, TTBC has a long and rich history, and we are now entering a period of renewal. This position presents an exciting opportunity for a Senior Pastor interested in joining an established and growing church, and we are looking for a leader who can help shape its direction for the future. TTBC is affiliated with the American Baptist Churches.

I.  Roles and Responsibilities 


A.  Preaching/Teaching Responsibilities

  • Serving as the primary teaching pastor and meeting the spiritual needs of our congregation through the preaching of God’s Word
  • Delivering a Gospel-centered and Bible-based message during our main service on Sundays and a shorter message during our mid-week prayer meetings
  • Utilizing and speaking at church-sponsored or church-related special events and ceremonies in support of the “universal church” as well as our local church (TTBC)
  • Teaching and counseling individual church members, regular attendees and visitors on the Gospel, baptism, church membership and discipleship
  • Acting as “servant leader” role model in church’s various ministries


B.  Pastoral Duties

  • Casting vision for church growth, building consensus and implementing growth strategy
  • Proactive engagement with wider urban church community and outreach to colleges and universities
  • Providing leadership and identifying priorities for Church Council (our governing body), Diaconate, church committees, as well as worship teams and musicians 
  • Fostering and promoting fellowship and community within church body
  • Attracting and reaching non-believers and those who have never attended church


C.  Management and Administrative Duties

  • Supervising and directing pastoral staff of 5 and administrative staff of 3+
  • Providing guidance to church committees with respect to TTBC’s specific governance requirements for committee composition, approvals and operation
  • Managing church programs and operations on Sunday (Sunday school programs, morning Bible studies, audio/visual and music, prayer meeting, hospitality and greeters)
  • Oversight of church building and property as well as rental agreements for building tenants (as managed through administrative staff and their operational support)
  • Coordinating with church’s finance function and trustees



II.  Qualifications


A.  Professional Qualifications 

  • Meeting qualifications for elders under 1 Timothy 3:1-13, Titus 1:6-9 and 1 Peter 5:2-3. 
  • In agreement with TTBC’s statement of faith, which is available at
  • Holding a high view of Scripture and adhering to the doctrine of Biblical inerrancy
  • Able to work in accordance with TTBC’s by-laws and governance structure (which include working with Church Council and egalitarian church leadership roles)
  • Master of Divinity


B.  Experience

  • Track record in church renewal and growth, and managing change and transitions
  • Working with multi-cultural, intergenerational congregation in an urban environment
  • Managerial experience in providing oversight for church staff and volunteers 
  • Experience as leader working with complex governance structure
  • Good understanding and appreciation of role of the American Baptist Churches

  • Ability to meet challenges and opportunities of a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment
  • Has optimistic outlook as well as the humor, integrity, flexibility and patience necessary to serve as a senior pastor

III.  About Our Church 


Tremont Temple Baptist Church has a rich history that has made it a leader in the Boston area for evangelism and social justice. The church was founded in 1839, and it became the first integrated church in America. Throughout its history, many famous individuals spoke or performed here, including Abraham Lincoln. The first reading in Boston of the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 took place here. Charles Dickens read for the first time in Boston his famous Christmas Carol here. Dwight L. Moody called the church “America’s pulpit.”


Today, TTBC is now entering a period of renewal. Roughly 125 to 150 people attend our weekly main service. We have a multi-cultural, intergenerational congregation with attendees from all walks of life. Our worship service incorporates a blend of traditional hymns, contemporary praise songs and choir/instrumental music. TTBC occupies and owns a seven story, multipurpose building.
