Senior High Ministry Director Role Description

Their responsibility is to equip God's people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ, until we come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God's Son that we will be mature and full grown in the Lord, measuring up to the full stature of Christ.

Covenant Church, an Evangelical Presbyterian Church, is a Christ-centered, Biblically-based community. Our calling is to continually grow in knowing and loving Jesus, both individually and corporately. This growth process enables us to better-and-better reflect God to our world and faithfully express our identity: Covenant Church…His people. His Kingdom. His glory. and our calling: Know Jesus, Grow with His People, God the World.
Our community is made up of approximately 850 members and active participants, situated near the Purdue University campus. Our family includes many diverse heritage and intellectual backgrounds. We emphasize corporate worship, discipleship, outreach, evangelism, and community building among our people, in part by serving one another.
Ministry Role: This role exists to partner with families, and adult and student leaders to relate to and provide an environment in which 9th through 12th grade students can Know Jesus, Grow with His People and Go to the World. This leader will “plant and water” in order to encourage senior high students to grow as followers of Christ, facilitating a deepening personal relationship with Christ and to launch them as people who know Christ, understand the next steps for their personal spiritual growth, and are ready to serve, lead others, and reach out to the world around them.
- Pray with and for students, families, lay leaders/servants.
- Reach students for Christ and minister directly to the Next Generation by providing discipleship, community life, and outreach opportunities unique to them.
- o Discipleship: Reach and equip each person in the Next Generation to develop a deepening personal relationship with Christ.
- o Community Life: Offer consistent group settings for the Next Generation to encourage one another, worship together and pray with one another apart from the larger church body. Also provide opportunities for the Next Generation to develop and use leadership skills and other gifts within their own generation.
- o Outreach: Equip the Next Generation to reach out to one another, their families, their peers and others outside of the faith, and to develop leadership skills and other gifts in these contexts.
Sunday Morning: The primary gathering of student ministry due to attendance. A ministry event targeted to appeal to a broad swath of students. Characterized by: welcoming guests, fellowship, vibrant instruction (anchoring them in the truth), and small group discussion, as well as providing a setting for student leaders to exercise their gifts. It will regularly incorporate a gospel presentation and worship and prayer as appropriate.
Key Initiatives (continued)
Sunday Night: The secondary focus meeting of the ministry, targeted to impact a broad swath of students and their friends. This event will be characterized by fun community building that fosters belonging and connection as well as intentional outreach. These events will also provide a setting for student leaders to exercise their gifts.
Wednesday (or other more optimal) Night: This strategic meeting is targeted toward developing student leaders, deepening their spiritual maturity, and equipping them for life in Christ. This will include equipping students to look back (How can you reach the students in younger grades, the next generation coming behind you?) and look ahead (We are preparing you for graduation and equipping you to be a self-feeding follower of Christ who remains connected to a faith community).
Develop an “on campus” presence with students (e.g., attending sporting events, school lunches, etc.)
Identify, provide and encourage participation in serving opportunities throughout the year.
Retreats and Camping: Alternating annual opportunities designed to provide an intensive growth environment for all students, as well as an opportunity for older and more mature student leaders to give leadership and use their gifts. Colorado one year, regional mission project the next; participate as freshmen and sophomores, lead as juniors and seniors.
Other Ministry Efforts: outreach, belonging, family or intergenerational interaction (parent/ children/student events (such as Daddy/Daughter Dance and Mommy/Daughter Tea).
Identify and develop student leaders: Develop and equip a student leader group (made up of mature followers of Christ) who share in evaluating and leading student ministries and discipling other students. Answering the question: Where was Jesus and how was He clearly displayed and pointed to? (not merely about ministry mechanics)
Recruit and equip volunteers: Pray for, equip and encourage lay leaders, teachers and ministry servants. Identify/recruit those individuals who show giftedness and passion for serving within Senior High Ministry. Volunteers will be skilled and equipped; high expectations for volunteers. On-going training.
- Equip parents to reach and disciple their children in order to build up families as the primary faith-forming centers of the Next Generation (spoken and written). Initiate personal “touches” with parents to encourage, assess spiritual health, and equip where needed (one-on-one, home visits, crisis support).
- Provide regular opportunities for families to grow, serve and reach out together in order to support the family as the primary faith-forming center of the Next Generation.
- Integration with the congregation: Next Gen Ministry expects and counts on all ministries to invite students to serve within their ministries and will look for ways to engage with the larger body on a regular basis. Equip (older) mentors to develop relationships with student leaders, meet students where they are, and encourage their growth in faith.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Student Ministry or Christian education. Two years of direct experience leading/discipling Senior High students is required.
