First UMC Shreveport (www.firstshreveport.org) is a downtown, multi-generational church reaching thousands across the Ark-La-Tex through numerous life-stage ministries as well as traditional and contemporary worship services each Sunday. We are Christ-centered and Wesleyan in our theology. We desire to see everyone in our community connecting to others in small groups, growing intentionally in their relationship with God, serving in missions locally and/or globally, and leading in their home, at work and in the church. Our average worship attendance is 1,000, and Sunday School is 650.

 

The Director is charged with helping fulfill First UMC’s Vision to help people Connect, Grow, Serve, and Lead in the name of Jesus Christ. The Director is particularly responsible for equipping and encouraging the congregation of First UMC Shreveport to grow in their knowledge and intimacy with God so they may ‘walk as Jesus walked.’ The position’s foci are: Discipleship Development, Adult Education, Prayer Ministry, and Men’s Ministry.

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Deeply committed follower of Jesus Christ resolved to model a godly lifestyle
  • Solid Biblical knowledge consistent with traditional United Methodist theology and practice • A passion to facilitate spiritual growth and replicate disciples of Jesus
  • Flexible, dedicated, dependable, energetic and highly motivated personality
  • A good team player capable of effective, relevant communication with volunteers and staff • Able to 
  • manage other staff

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Graduate degree in theology or pastoral ministry, or certification in Spiritual Formation preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years in fruitful ministry growing disciples


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Champion the Grow portion of FUMC’s 1Vision (Connect. Grow. Serve. Lead.) 
  • Help inspire personal growth in Christ as a priority in the life of our staff and congregation 
  • Discipleship Development 
  • Lead in communication and practice of spiritual formation as the intentional life-long practice of spiritual disciplines 
  • Work with all the program areas of the church to help them grow disciples 
  • Develop practical tools and resource people to take their next steps in following Christ 
  • Adult Education 
  • Develop and nurture opportunities for adults to grow in their knowledge of Christ and the Kingdom of God through SS, Study Groups, and special events 
  • Prayer Ministry 
  • Foster a culture of prayer throughout the congregation 
  • Organize Prayer Room, Homebound Prayer Warriors, National Day of Prayer, and other opportunities to grow in the understanding and practice of transforming prayer 
  • Men’s Ministry 
  • Organize men’s growth groups, fellowship dinners, fundraisers, retreats, and missions 
  • Gather, encourage, and equip staff and volunteer teams to effectively grow disciples 
  • Work with the 1Vision Team to celebrate, evaluate, retool, and strategically plan ministry 
  • Engage in Staff meetings to integrate spiritual formation into the whole of FUMCS’s ministry 
  • Present an annual budget and work within the budget set by the Church Council
