For the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, the parable of the mustard seed serves as an example of how great growth can come from humble beginnings. This small congregation that began in the latter half of the 19th century had the promise of ministry and service, which would in time, circle the globe. The progression of FPC Bethlehem has always remained purposeful, and has successfully sustained its influence in the surrounding community since its inception.

Today, the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem continues its rich heritage as a beacon of hope in its region. For 140 years the church has built a legacy of Jesus-centered and Bible-based ministry alongside strong leadership and compassionate outreach. It remains a multi-generational church that is deeply rooted in the community, flooding its surrounding neighborhoods with a fresh culture of faith found in the love and the goodness of God. FPCB also continues to maximize its denominational influence, significantly impacting the ethos and future of the Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians (ECO), that continues to be one of the fastest growing denominations in the United States and Canada.

The Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem will have oversight of the entire music department of the church. This individual will champion the mission, values, priorities, and beliefs of FPCB, and execute all duties and responsibilities pertaining to the role, within the context of such visional tenets of the church.

In essence, the next Director of Music of FPCB will be a highly creative leader with a confident disposition who exudes (1) an unwavering work ethic that demonstrates servant leadership, (2) an uncompromising sense of integrity, and (3) an unyielding commitment to teamwork. The individual who enters this role will personify such essential leadership characteristics, as they seek to meet, achieve, and exceed all goals and objectives of this position.

The successful candidate will carefully discern and strive to understand the music program and worship culture of the church, thereby offering the congregation an excellent Sunday experience that guides and draws them into God’s presence. While embracing and appreciating both the existing traditional and contemporary music programs of the church, this individual will offer strategic input to the future of the program and offer directional leadership (in collaboration with the Senior Pastor) to take each to its next level by seamlessly integrating both styles into a holistic worship experience.

For the purpose of successfully executing all expectations related to the position, it is imperative that the prospective candidate understands, and has had extensive exposure to, a wide cannon of music ranging from traditional to contemporary styles. He/she will reveal a strong aptitude for producing a vast variety of music that exemplifies both traditional and contemporary worship. Not only will this individual be a master vocalist, but he/she will also have demonstrated instrumental competency with capability to read/chart music.

A master’s degree or its equivalent in church music, accompanying, organ performance, and choral conducting with at least ten (10) years of experience; or four to ten years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required for this position.
