Job Description:

Edenton Street United Methodist Church is a community of faith, inviting all to encounter Jesus, preparing believers to deepen their dependence on God, caring for those who are hurting, sending ordinary people into the world equipped to do extraordinary things.  ESUMC is not simply a number of red brick buildings on the corner of Edenton and Dawson Streets in downtown Raleigh, NC! While we have been on this corner for two hundred years we are a vibrant growing community leaning into the twenty-first century.


Edenton Street is in search of a full-time Communications Manager who is a self-starter.  The successful candidate will be a connector that partners with clergy, staff and church members to implement an effective and compelling communications strategy enabling ESUMC to achieve its mission, which is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.  The priorities for this position will be internal public relations, social media and external public relations. The role will require significant teamwork, a professional level skill in oral and written communication and an individual that thrives in a deadline driven environment. 


Key Responsibilities:

1. Facilitate and continue to grow a multi-site mission-driven communication plan that defines our core language and branding

2. Maintain policies and protocol for each approved channel of communication, including a master calendar, timelines, accountability structures, and style guidelines

3. Manage promotional efforts internally and externally (email, the church’s website, The City, social media, sermon series campaigns, worship service announcements, physical church spaces, and various other efforts)

4. Determine communication goals, establish measurement processes, and evaluate the success of promotional efforts through statistics and qualitative data—to the degree that it is relevant to the work of the church

5. Oversee the process for audio/video capture and online postings

6. Coordinate with vendors, contracted employees, and staff around design, printing, and mailings

7. Operate as quality control for graphic and content standards

8. Oversee an annual communication budget



  1. Minimum of one year of work experience in the field of communications or marketing, previous church employment is a plus
  2. Experience in creating or executing communications plans
  3. Demonstrated success leading, managing, and working with diverse groups
  4. Must be available to work a flexible full-time schedule to include evenings and weekends; 1-2 Sundays per month are required
  5. Skilled at writing, editing, and proofreading copy
  6. Competent in:
  7. Technical Expertise - Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, Facebook, Twitter, & Instagram
  8. Proactive – Intrinsic motivation for accomplishing a tasks and perseveres in the midst of adversity
  9. Fosters Innovation – Able to develop, sponsor and support the introduction of new and improved methods, productions, processes, procedures, and technologies
  10. Quality Orientation - a passion for visual and editing excellence; an affinity for seeing detail and identifying flaws, proofreading and editing



  1. Aims to live as a disciple of Jesus Christ
  2. A bachelor’s degree in Communications or a related field of study

(English, Journalism, Marketing, etc.)
