Job Description:

The River Church exists to help people become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.  We consider reaching people one of our greatest responsibilities. Our weekend services serve people at all stages in their spiritual journey but are primarily geared toward the lost and unchurched.


The role of the Pastor of Student Ministries (PSM) is to oversee the student ministry strategy of The River Church, under the direction and leadership of the Executive Pastor.  This will require a firm grasp of the beliefs, values and strategy of The River Church and the ability to align staff and key leadership teams with its mission, vision and values. The PSM partners with parents to disciple their student while equipping healthy families.


The Pastor of Student Ministries will be responsible for the following:


1.    Model Biblical Priorities


Responsible for upholding Biblical priorities and core values of The River Church. The PSM should represent a growing personal relationship with Christ. The PSM models a strong relationship with his or her spouse and children (if applicable).  The PSM strives to fulfill his or her purpose in life and ministry while demonstrating integrity in words, relationships and actions.  These objectives are accomplished by:


v Committing to a regular quiet-time with God.

v Setting appropriate boundaries with time and relationships to protect character and integrity.

v Developing personal evangelism opportunities within and outside the church.

v Supporting the ministries of The River Church by faithfully giving 10% in tithe.

v Adhering to and encompassing the qualities and characteristics required of The River Church employees.


 2.    Leadership of Volunteer Teams


Success in this role will be best accomplished by prioritizing an investment in ministry leaders who, in turn, influence parents and students.  The PSM is responsible for creating an environment that attracts, develops and empowers the leaders providing ministry programming to all students by:


v Communicating a clear vision and defined ministry wins for volunteer teams on a regular basis.

v Building systems and structures that lead people from being spectators to volunteers.

v Overseeing safety and security systems for students (e.g. background checks, safety and security procedures, etc.)

v Leading volunteer meetings

v Championing the student ministries leadership development strategy.

v Provide opportunities for training leaders.

v Providing volunteers with best practices in student ministries.

v Creating and continuously improving follow-up methods to ensure that new students and their families and plugged into The River Church.

v Developing, submitting and managing budget forecasts and expenses for finance team.

v Provide intentional opportunities to show appreciation to the volunteers.


3.    Oversight and Execution of Environments


Responsible for creating programs that provide engaging experiences and life-changing environments for students from 7th-12th grade by:


v Providing insight and direction for big picture programming and creative planning processes.

v Selecting relevant curriculum and teachings for the ministry.

v Create and maintain a safe environment for teens at The River Church.


4.    Oversight and Execution of Small Groups


Develop and maintain practical onramps and systems to help teens and their parents move from visiting to belonging and growing by:


v Developing a systematic and effective effort to integrate teens into small groups.

v Oversee information and tracking small group participants and leaders.

v Encourage small group leaders to connect with teens throughout the week.

v Provide opportunities for teens to discover their unique purpose and begin to develop those talents and abilities.

v Offer small group leaders curriculum and coaching to be a successful leader.

v Design outreach and mission opportunities for teens.


 5.      Additional Pastoral Responsibilities


v These will be assigned at the privy of the Executive Pastor.  These roles and responsibilities will be shaped and determined based on the candidate’s gifting’s and experiences within the scope and vision of The River Church. 


The River Church launched in the summer of 2007 with just five families and the current lead pastor Matthew Trexler as the founding pastor.  The River met in a series of locations as the church body grew, everything from the pastor’s living room to rented spaces to the current location.  In January of 2011, The River held its first service on the current campus.  As the church grows, we continue to expand physical space on this campus.  The church has recently begun a partnership with a consulting group to develop extensive master plans.  Currently, the overall attendance is averaging 426, youth is averaging about 43. 


The River Church is located in Marion, Indiana which is a town in Grant County and is centrally located in the state.  Grant County has approximately 65,000 residents.  There are five public school systems located within Grant County and The River Church sees youth from a variety, but primarily from two nearby school districts and some Christian school students as well. The community is influenced by two major Christian universities that both sit in the county lines – Indiana Wesleyan University and Taylor University. 


Grant County has many ministry opportunities as many residents struggle financially.  The community was previously based on auto industry employers, but modern day employers pay a significantly lower wage, forcing many to struggle.  Thirty-three percent of Grant County youth under the age of 18 are considered to be living in poverty, a percentage much higher than the state average (21%) or even the national average (22%). Despite the shrinking economy and lagging population of the county, The River Church has been blessed to be growing and growing consistently.  Families and individuals are finding the ministries of The River Church to be a source of hope and the people are finding a safe place to belong and grow together spiritually.  We have great goals to continue reaching our community and help them break out of unhealthy cycles.  There are many unreached in our community and we desire to reach out to them with a strong hand of hope.
