Our Context: Grace Baptist Church is a multi-generational congregation of 300 growing and worshipping together on the east side of Salem, Oregon, the state’s capital city. Grace Baptist Church exists to reach out to the community, build up believers in their faith, and equip workers to reach their peers for Christ’s kingdom. Children are the future of the Church and so this area is a key component in our spiritual development plan for a healthy church, both now and in the future. We have a long history of vibrant and creative ministry to children and we are seeking its next leader.


Purpose: To guide children to a saving relationship with Christ, to build them up in their faith, and to create in them a strong desire to serve Christ all of their lives.


Primary Responsibilities
The Director of Children’s Ministries will:

  • have complete oversight of all Children’s Ministries (from Nursery through 5th grade).
  • develop all programs for Children's Ministry in conjunction with the priorities and philosophy of Grace Baptist Church, which include reaching, building and equipping priorities.
  • assess, evaluate, and develop an organizational structure and plan for all areas of Children’s Ministries.
  • develop annual Ministry Goals and budget for Children’s Ministry.
  • work on development of Job Descriptions for Children’s Ministry workers and leaders as needed.
  • be responsible for recruiting and training workers for the Children’s Ministry.
  • hold regular meetings with leaders of the programs involved with Children’s Ministries and attend monthly meetings with the Children’s Ministry Leadership Team. 
  • oversee and coordinate children’s activities during special church events.
  • participate in all church-wide corporate outreach events.
  • lead at least one Children’s Outreach Event each year.
  • have oversight of all written policies and procedures for the Children’s Ministry and present these to the Deacon Board for approval.

Primary Working Relationships
The Director of Children’s Ministries will:

  • answer directly to the Senior Pastor.
  • work with church staff to fulfill the mission of Grace Baptist Church.
  • be accountable to the Lord, the Senior Pastor, the Deacon Board, and parents.

Qualifications of a Strong Candidate
A strong candidate for the Director of Children’s Ministry will:

  • have a deep and growing faith in God, be committed to building Church community, and have a clear understanding of Baptist theology.
  • embody love for families, youth and children and have a firm commitment to nurturing a safe environment for our children to learn, grow and develop.
  • have experience and/or training working with children in a range of community and educational settings.
  • work effectively with adult volunteers and parents, both as a leader and as a responsive listener.
  • possess great communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • exhibit enthusiasm and creativity in helping children and parents develop their faith together.
  • show sound understanding of childhood growth and development and help equip parents and teachers with tools and a framework for age-appropriate learning and discovery.
  • be able to demonstrate their ability to lead with initiative while working well in a team context.
  • know how to regularly plan ahead in order to share leadership broadly with our volunteer teachers and leaders.

Terms: This position is half time (0.50 FTE) position. Salary is commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the experience of the candidate. A background check is required.
