First Baptist Church Jackson is not a building, but a committed fellowship of believers. The church has established itself as a flagship of the SBC network, long since its inception in 1838. FBCJ is Christ centered, pastor led, deacon served, and committee approved within a framework of congregational authority.

Located in the epicenter of Mississippi, the church has a long history of great preaching that is built around the pulpit from the 1940’s. Rooted in expository biblical teaching, FBCJ continues this longstanding legacy through current Senior Pastor, Dr. Matt Brooks. The church has sustained an active membership of 10,000 and draws an average attendance of approximately 3,500 on Sunday mornings. Offering excellent ministry programming for all ages, the church is highly relevant and relatable to the multi-generational congregation it attracts each week.

The role of Spiritual Development Pastor will provide oversight and direction for the church’s approach to spiritual development and programs for spiritual growth. They will specifically focus on bringing functionality, sustainability, and excellence to the Small Group Ministry, Sunday School, and all elements that involve such programming that contributes to the spiritual development of the believers at FBCJ. This position will work cooperatively and collaboratively with both the executive team and other ministry team leaders.

Success in this role will be defined by:

  1. Ministry teams fulfilling the mission and vision of FBCJ in their respective ministry areas as a result of faithful and intentional leadership offered through this position.
  2. 80% of congregation involved in groups and group life.
  3. 10 new Small Groups emerging each year.
  4. Ministry areas successfully meeting, achieving, and exceeding all established goals and expectations.

A master’s degree with a seminary background is preferred for this position. The ideal candidate will have a passion to see people ‘doing life together,’ while growing both relationally and spiritually in the local church. This individual will be naturally administrative-minded with a firmly rooted understanding of structure and systematic processes. They will have a recognizable quality of innovation, with strong team building skills, with a specialty in developing small and mid-size groups, extending to larger groups. The successful candidate will currently bear leadership responsibilities in a role similar to that of a Spiritual Development Pastor, having oversight of approximately 1800 participants.
