First Baptist Church Jackson is not a building, but a committed fellowship of believers. The church has established itself as a flagship of the SBC network, long since its inception in 1838. FBCJ is Christ centered, pastor led, deacon served, and committee approved within a framework of congregational authority.

Located in the epicenter of Mississippi, the church has a long history of great preaching that is built around the pulpit from the 1940’s. Rooted in expository biblical teaching, FBCJ continues this longstanding legacy through current Senior Pastor, Dr. Matt Brooks. The church has sustained an active membership of 10,000 and draws an average attendance of approximately 3,500 on Sunday mornings. Offering excellent ministry programming for all ages, the church is highly relevant and relatable to the multi-generational congregation it attracts each week.

The Missional Disciple-Making Pastor will, essentially, be significantly concentrated on both the discipleship and evangelistic process of the church. This role will inspire, implement, equip, and foster the growth of discipleship and outreach areas within the context and vision of FBCJ. Additional responsibilities will include the assessment, development, and ongoing maintenance of systems in areas of oversight.

Success in this role will be defined by:

  1. The areas of missions and discipleship fulfilling the mission and vision of FBCJ, as a result of faithful and intentional leadership offered through this position.
  2. A successful disciple-making process founded upon the mission and core values of the church.
  3. Flourishing group life with an active participation increase of 50%.
  4. An operative strategy designed to assimilate and train volunteer leadership within the church.
  5. An increased local and global awareness evident within the culture of FBJC.
  6. Increased involvement in outreach endeavors, with 25% of congregation serving in short-term local/global missions.
  7. A well-developed and expanding outreach ministry that is impacting the city, the state, and the world.

A bachelor’s degree is required, although master’s degree is preferred for this position. The successful candidate for the position of Missional Disciple-Making Pastor will be marked by qualities of a multiplying leader, a systems administrator, and a highly relational pastor. Ideally, they will have a history of working for large churches, and propelling individuals and teams towards growth and expansion. In addition to possessing a firm understanding of the missional history of the Southern Baptist Convention, the prospective candidate will be innately equipped with an entrepreneurial work ethic, a disposition that communicates approachability, a propensity for development, and a high sense of emotional and relational intelligence.
