ROLE:   Primary:  To be the culture builder and vision collaborator for Riverbend’s local and global outreach strategy. This includes extending the Riverbend community into other regions of Central Texas through creative and innovative development of service driven partnerships and startups.  Also, to connect the Riverbend community to faith-oriented communities overseas that can develop into sister communities for our church, through which we may have a global impact.


Secondary:  To build a culture of Riverbenders being trained, equipped, and empowered to use their talents, gifts, and life experiences to come alongside of and serve others.  To shepherd, encourage, and challenge our congregation to grow spiritually as they learn to trust God to work in and through them.  To invest in select leaders, creating reproductive mentoring relationships.



BASIC FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITY: Primary strategic leader for local and global impact ministry.  Significant work with missions and outreach leaders across Austin and the world, as well as with Riverbend leaders and volunteers.  To be the Champion Leader of missions to the staff, to the congregation, and to the community around us.

Missions Visionary


Working collaboratively with our church leadership, the missions committee, and spiritual and missions leaders across the city and globe, helping us to envision the next opportunities for serving our city, and our world, where Riverbenders can use their human resources, intellectual resources, and financial resources to serve the needs of others, and have a spiritual voice across the city. 



Missions Equipper


Develop training methods to help people best serve others in cross-culture environments, employing best practices so that we are equipped and prepared to allow God to work through us to make a difference in people’s lives.



Volunteer Leadership & Team Development:


Continue to develop individuals and lay leadership teams that will oversee, develop, implement, and invite others to participate in serving others throughout the city and the world who are faced with different life struggles, and/or who are located in various different geographical areas.


Develop volunteer teams for each area of the Mission’s ministry.  Work closely with the lay leaders to recruit, train, schedule, encourage, and shepherd their volunteers.  Make sure that there is a focus on spiritual development of these leaders as well, helping them to spiritually develop other volunteers.


Developing and Overseeing all Missions Programs:


Together with the missions committee, help provide oversight and ensure that all three elements of our strategy are being implemented through the variety of programs we’ve established at Riverbend.  These three elements include:


  • Exposure – Help our congregation becoming “others focused” through exposing them to service opportunities.


  • Involvement – Help people to use their skills and gifts to serve those in need, interacting with them in person.


  • Relationship – Help people to serve others on an ongoing basis, investing in them, developing relationships, discerning needs, and as their passions ignite finding new ways to serve the people.



Mission’s Visibility and Communication:


Increase the visibility of Riverbend’s missions programs and their results to the congregation and to the city at large, through personal connections on and off campus, promotional/communications channels, and networking.



Missions Prayer Support and Fund Raising:


Develop funding for missions directly for specific projects, programs and people.  Connect to people’s passions through their direct involvement in order to create sustainable prayer and financial support communities for the various mission’s initiatives.



Pastoral Duties:


Pray for, shepherd, care, teach, lead, and mentor various members of our congregation.  Occasionally perform weddings, baptisms, or funerals.  Be available to people in need as situations arise, to listen, pray, make hospital visits, home or office visits.





SUPERVISION EXERCISED:  There are no direct staff reports to this position.  However, there is significant recruitment, scheduling, training, shepherding, development and supervision of volunteers.




  • College education, seminary degree preferred.
  • 10 years minimum experience in ministry & or non-profit missions work.  Pastoral experience preferred.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule according to the needs of the ministry.  Requires Sundays, occasional Saturdays, and some evenings.  Requires going on several missions trips away from Austin throughout the year, as well as attending some conferences.
  • Looking for a leader of leaders: able to equip and empower leaders to lead our various missions’ efforts.
  • Must have a heart for mercy and justice for the marginalized in society, combined with a strong desire to see people spiritually transformed as they learn to love and serve others unconditionally, trusting God to work in and through them. 
  • “No job too small” attitude: not afraid to get hands dirty in order to get the work done when necessary.




  • Understanding of best practices employed around the globe for serving missionally.
  • Good public speaking and presentational skills (preaching and or teaching to large groups).
  • Relatively proficient in all Microsoft Office programs, Database management, social media communications.
  • Good organizational skills and time-line management skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, juggling multiple priorities.
  • Good communications skills, both verbal & writing.
  • Good people skills – must be very relational.
  • Ability to do light to moderate lifting, carrying supplies & helping to set up for meetings, events, and other church functions.
