Riverwood Community Chapel is a midsize bible-teaching church in Kent, Ohio. Our mission is to pursue Jesus, grow together, serve others, and make disciples.

The Elementary and Middle School Pastor provides support and spiritual shepherding for Riverwood’s ministry to students in grades 1-8 and their families. They work closely with the High School Director and the Preschool Director to ensure smooth transitions into and out of the Elementary and Middle School ministries.  This role will provide oversight and management to grades 1-4 and hands on leadership and development of the middles school ministry (5-8).  The Elementary and Middle School Pastor will be gifted at creating an exciting, fun, challenging and growing ministry that engages all middle school students. There will be 30 hours of additional part-time assistance in the managing of the elementary ministry.

They should lead by example, and cultivate a positive spirit throughout the church family.  They should represent Christ and His church well in the community at large.  They should be a team player and follow the biblical model of sacrifice by being willing to put the needs of others in front of their own.


Elementary Responsibilities: (in conjunction with the Curriculum coordinator and the Family Experience and Camp Director)

  • Enlist, equip, and empower a team of volunteers to own and teach and assist the 1st – 4th Grade classes on Sunday mornings.
  • Process all volunteer applications and determine appropriate fit in which to serve. Complete all onboarding for new volunteers.
  • Be a primary communication point with volunteers throughout their time of service.
  • Connecting, listening to, and encouraging parents of the elementary students.
  • Equipping parents with materials and ideas for how to engage their elementary students in spiritual discussions
  • Be involved with the monthly Family Experience (FX) and a part of the FX planning team led by the Elementary Director.
  • For whole-church events, anticipate and plan for the children’s aspects of such events.

Middle School Responsibilities:

  • With volunteer staff:
  • Recruiting and training leaders
  • With parents:
  • Connecting, listening to, and encouraging parents of the middle school students.
  • Equipping parents with materials and ideas for how to engage their high schooler in spiritual discussions.
  • With students:
  • Building gender-specific relationships with students and counseling in gender-specific context.
  • Event planning and facilitating actual events and regular meeting times (weekly Wednesday night programming that is high energy and fun with a small group component for the 7th and 8th graders).
  • Plan and lead Camp Riverwood Extreme (5th and 6th grades) in conjunction with the Camp Director (1st – 4th grades).
  • Plan and lead two retreats each year for the junior high students (7th & 8th).
  • Plan and lead one mission’s trip each summer for the junior high students (7th & 8th).

  • Plan, lead, and recruit volunteers to invest in the 5th and 6th grade ministry consisting of Sunday morning classes and occasional social events led by this role. (roughly monthly)
  • Model the qualifications of an elder (1 Tim 3:1-7, Titus 1:6-9, 1 Peter 5:1-4
  • Model biblical community in his relationships (Matt 5:23-24, Matt 18:15-17, Eph 4:25-32)
  • Model biblical family life before the body (Eph 5:22 – 6:4)
  • Model biblical integrity in all things (1 Tim 6:11-12)

Role Model in Personal Life Requirements


  • 3-5 years of practical ministry experience
  • Experience leading a Middle School ministry
  • Seminary Education preferred.
  • Must align with the vision, values, and doctrinal statement of Riverwood Community Chapel.
