Vision: Through the Power of the Holy Spirit, Lives Changed, God’s Kingdom Expanded!

Mission: The Yellowknife Alliance Church, through the power of the Holy Spirit, is committed to building a community of Christ-centred disciples that: worships together; cares for people; and reaches out with the gospel message to see lives changed and God’s kingdom expanded.

Church Profile

The Yellowknife Alliance Church (YKAC) was established in 1987, originally meeting in a mine recreation hall. Until 2006 we rented space for services, at which time we moved into our own facility. A former dairy barn on a 6 acre lot on the outskirts of the City (10 km from downtown) was renovated to become our church, affectionately referred to as “The Barn”.
Yellowknife is a transient community, and our congregation has reflected that. A typical Sunday will see about 80 people in attendance, with perhaps 10 of those having been part of the YKAC church family for more than 15 years. At present the congregation is largely mature adults, with a few young families and young adults.  We have a small children's ministry that we would like to grow.  We do have a good group in our church who are very involved in community organizations, activities and outreach, so YKAC is well reprsented, but we would like to have a more organizational presence in the community. In the context of service “we don’t go to church”, “we are the church”.
YKAC has a heart for mission work, financially supporting Alliance missions, local missions, and two non-Alliance missions. Our church has had representatives participate in short-term mission trips in 2012 and 2015, with another planned for 2017. In our yearly budget we’ve always made mission work a priority, allotting as much as 20% of the budget to missions.

The church is a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Western Canadian District. You can learn more about our denominational family by visiting our district website at www.transformcma.ca

Community Profile
Yellowknife is a community of about 20,000, nestled in the wilderness, on the shore of Great Slave Lake. While small, the community is the territorial capital and so has many of the services of a much larger centre. It is a very multi-cultural and welcoming community. Yellowknife is a great place to raise a family with good schools and excellent health care.

The great outdoors is where Yellowknife really shines. In the summer there is camping, hunting, fishing and more. In the winter there is cross country skiing, snowmobiling and yes, ice fishing; and of course Yellowknife is known as the northern lights capital of the world.  Long, long summer days with 20+ hours of sunshine, and short winter days with limited daylight make for a very unique environment.

There are six evangelical congregations in the City, as well as United, Anglican, Lutheran and Catholic churches, an Islamic Centre and a Kingdom Hall. Yellowknife’s churches are connected through the YK Ministerial Association, which has good participation and cooperation. The Yellowknive churches work together each year and worship together with Lenten Lunches and Easter Services, participating in the Christmas parade, and cross church Bible Studies.

To successfully live in Yellowknife you must be prepared for fantastic though too short summers, and very long and very cold winters. Shopping choices are limited. Yellowknife is a wonderful place to live. The City’s website is a good source for additional information on life in the Knife:  https://www.yellowknife.ca/en/index.asp
