We are an established church (founded in 1956) with an average Sunday attendance of around 180. The church has been part of the Berean Fellowship of Churches since 1984 (You can visit http://www.weareberean.org/ for more information regarding the Fellowship and its beliefs). Our church is diverse in terms of age and has ministries designed to minister to each age group. We have nursery for children two and under; Sunday school, age-appropriate children’s church (age 4-Kindergarten and for grades 1-5) and an AWANA program for children age 3-6th grade; youth group for grades 7-12 which currently meet together although they have met separately in the past; many Bible studies and small groups; and a Double Nickels program for adults age 55+. There are also other events such as a Labor Day campout weekend, Junior Camp for children, Vacation Bible School, various outreach events and conferences, and much more.
On Sunday, the church has two services with a Sunday school hour (9:30-10:30) between them. The first service meets from 8:15-9:15 and is an informal service (approximately 25-30 people) that meets in our HeBrews coffee room. The second service meets in the church auditorium from 10:45-noon (approximately 140-175 people) and has a full worship team. There are a variety of worship styles and we have a blended worship style that tilts more towards contemporary than traditional.
The church has been under the leadership of Pastor John Wetzig and his wife Debbie for thirty-two years and they are retiring this summer (July 31st). Debbie has served as the administrative assistant, children’s ministry coordinator, and several other roles for many years. The youth pastor, Benji Hall, who has ministered at GCBC since 2008, is going to be stepping into the role of lead pastor upon the Wetzigs’ retirement. The vote to call Pastor Benji to fill the lead pastor role was unanimous showing that this is a healthy transition situation. The church is excited about this time of transition and the opportunity to grow into God’s future for us. We are also excited to see who God will bring to fill the ministry roles that are being vacated during the change.
Our church governance is elder led and we currently have an elder board that is currently made up of two pastors and six lay-people. The board meets together once a month for business and once a month for prayer.
For more information regarding the church, its history and beliefs, ministries, etc. please visit www.grenadaberean.org. The website is still partially under construction but is getting close to completion and should be able to give you a good flavor of what the church is like.
Our desire as a church is for people to operate in their God-given giftedness (both spiritual gifts and natural abilities/talents). Below is what we would envision the youth pastor’s responsibilities to be:
-Planning and preparing youth groups for students in grades 7-12
-Being the primary teacher of the youth who teaches the Word of God accurately and enthusiastically
-Creating opportunities for the youth to grow and use their gifts for ministry (currently students are involved on the worship teams for Sunday morning and youth group, help at AWANA with games and groups, serve as junior helpers and counselors for Junior Camp, help at VBS, and more)
-Recruiting volunteers as necessary for youth groups, Sunday school, and trips
-Training and managing volunteer team
-Planning of periodic retreats or conferences
-Encouraging students to be involved in World Missions opportunities
-Coordinating with other area churches to reach the students in the community
-Counseling students and providing spiritual assistance/guidance to their parents as the need arises
-Attending monthly board meetings and weekly staff meetings
Position Requirements (non-negotiables):
The new youth pastor must be:
-a born again follower of Christ whose commitment to the Lord is evident in their life
-in line with the doctrinal statement of GCBC
-qualified as an elder according to 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9 (all pastors are part of the board of elders)
Position Bonuses (negotiables):
We would prefer that the new youth pastor be:
-a graduate of Bible college or seminary (previous formal ministry experience may be considered in lieu of this)
-ability to lead worship through singing and playing guitar/keyboard is a plus
Timeline for Search:
We will be collecting resumes during the month of April, beginning the interview process in late April, and ideally, we would like to have our new youth pastor in place by the beginning of June in order to aid in the transition process.
Grenada Community Berean Church is the only church in the small community of Grenada, CA (population of 250). Our church is a blend of people from the community and those who travel from surrounding towns. We are a rural church in a conservative area of far northern California. Ranching is a very popular profession in both the county and in the church. The area is predominantly Caucasian with Hispanic and Native American being the next largest demographics. Wal-Mart is the “mall” of Siskiyou County and you must drive an hour to Medford, OR in order to find a community over 50,000 people with suburban amenities. Medford is also the closest airport to Grenada. Siskiyou County is a wonderful place for people who love the outdoors as there are ample opportunities for backpacking, camping, hunting, fishing, and many more outdoor activities. We are also located about thirty miles from Mt. Shasta which is a 14,162 foot volcano which is snow-covered year round and provides wilderness hiking and skiing opportunities.
