Position Title: Director Children’s Ministries 

Position Classification: Full-time (40 hours per week, including Sunday and some evenings)

Salary: highly competative and tied with experience


Who We are: St. Peter’s is a growing, multisite United Methodist Church with an average attendance of over 1,400 per week. We are located in the suburban area of Katy on the west side of Houston. The Katy area is rapidly growing and includes one of the most dynamic school districts in the Houston area and in Texas. Our mission is to connect the world with God’s love and we seek a children’s director who will equip children to live out this mission through their daily lives.


1. How this position supports the stated mission of St. Peter’s UMC:

Children’s Ministries seeks ways to help St. Peter’s grow according to the growing diversity of the Katy area to provide the framework for building firm faith foundations in children from infancy through the completion of 5th grade. This framework is achieved through meaningful, purpose driven, educational programs. The Director advocates for inclusion and connection of children in every area of congregational life, worship, and ministries. Children’s Ministries provides opportunities for children from St. Peter’s, the community, and the world to connect with one another and grow in their faith through education and missions.


2. Main areas of responsibility:

Develop and/or select curriculum for all Children’s Ministries programs in conjunction with the Pastor and age group coordinators

Supervise and work closely with the Children’s Ministries staff and volunteers providing oversight and planning for all ministries

Assist with recruitment and training of volunteers and/or staff for all children’s programs in accordance with the Safe Sanctuary Policy

Direct Elementary Sunday School including curriculum development, class placement and rosters, and Club 45 activities

Oversee Vacation Bible School and similar activities

Review and approve the annual budget for Children’s Ministries


3. Specific job duties associated with these areas of responsibility:

Create, develop and/or select and assemble curriculum for all Children’s Ministries program

Greet children, families, & teachers on Sunday mornings. Provide supervision, organization, support, and supplies necessary for Sunday School. Register and check-in teachers and children

Assist in recruitment and training of volunteers

Develop and/or coordinate programming for Elementary aged programs including Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and Club 45

Oversee programming with Nursery Coordinator, Pre-School Coordinator, SPLASH Coordinator, Special Kids Ministry, and Summer Ministries Director

Attend and/or plan meetings including - church staff, church council, Children’s Ministries Team, Kid Connection Crew, Pizza with the Pastors

Communicate with staff and volunteers and provide Community outreach via social media, e-mail, website, flyers, mailings, bulletin boards, postcards, thank you notes, etc.

5. Types and frequency of outside contacts.


Outside contacts include children, teachers, volunteers, parents, families, community members, and other Christian Educators via social media, e-mail, telephone, mail, advertising, newspaper articles, bulletin items, meetings, website, newsletters, and face-to-face communication. Many of these contacts are made on a daily basis and others occur on a rotational schedule.


6. List minimum, specific skills and education required to perform this position successfully.

Minimum five years prior Children’s Ministry experience

United Methodist background preferred

Degree in Early Childhood Education preferred

Christian Educator certification a plus

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Significant volunteer recruitment experience

Strong computer skills including Windows (Word, Excel, etc.) and Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
