Position: Minister to Youth
Reports to: Senior Minister
Classification: Full-time, Exempt
Role: Create and direct opportunities for students, volunteer youth leaders and parents to
encounter Jesus Christ and deepen their Christian faith through Scripture, group and interpersonal
activity, mission and spiritual formation. Participate as a pastor of Colonial Church as part of the
Responsibilities (directly or through collaboration with others):
1. Program creation and management.
a. Design and implement, with assistance, Wednesday night and Sunday morning programs for a
middle and high school population of approximately 100. Components will include worship,
Bible study, prayer, spiritual formation, group experiences and service relevant to adolescent’s
faith/moral development and content-rich in order to promote deep Christian discipleship.
b. Design and implement, with assistance, special events, mission trips and retreats appropriate
for enhancing faith development, relationships, service and spiritual growth in Christ.
2. Leadership Recruitment and Training.
a. Attract, train, and supervise volunteer leaders and ministry teams to lead ongoing programs
and one-time events and ensure effective coordination and collaboration with other ministries
within the church.
b. Work with Youth Ministry Associate (to be hired) and Church Staff to implement high quality
c. Arrange and supervise adult involvement in students’ lives.
3. Pastoral Care, Family Support and Parental Encouragement
a. Provide regular communication for families and opportunities for parents and students in
worship and programming.
b. Provide an active, personal presence in the lives of students, develop one-on-one and family
relationships to keep students connected and engaged; intervene in times of spiritual and
personal struggles as appropriate.
4. Confirmation Leader and Camp Pyro 2 Director
a. Design and implement year-long confirmation program for ninth graders that conveys basics
and essence of Christian faith, offers intentional experiences for spiritual development and
culminates in “confirmation of faith” each fall.
b. Develop, organize and implement weeklong summer camp for middle school students (August).
5. Participate as collaborative member of Pastoral Staff
a. Work collaboratively with the pastoral staff in the larger ministry of the church. Serve as the
public face of youth ministry and integrate students into the life of the congregation.
b. Preach/participate in worship services occasionally.
c. Actively work with the Upper Room (partner church) in youth/student ministry collaboration.
Essential Experience and Skills
• Demonstrated active and deepening commitment to Jesus Christ, working knowledge of Scripture
and affirmation of the mission and values of Colonial Church.
• 3 years of experience as church youth director or assistant youth director.
• Education: BA/BS required with Masters/formal theological training preferred.
• Leadership and communication skills with adolescents, volunteer management, teaching and
organization, team building, interpersonal communication, familiarity with issues related to
teenagers and culture, proficiency in technology and social media.
