Job Description:

Western Hills Church of San Mateo is looking for a dynamic leader to give vision, direction and leadership to our music/worship ministry. The ideal candidate will excel in leading and developing worship teams to lead our congregation in spirit-filled worship.


Position Nature:                                This is a part-time, paid professional ministry position.


Position Reports to:                          Senior Pastor


The Worship Leader/Pastor will:    

  • Design, organize, and lead the WHC worship services
  • Provide development, oversight and input into the Magnification Team Ministry
  • Collaborate with other pastoral staff to create meaningful and memorable worship environments and experiences for weekly services and special events
  • Lead the non-preaching portions of worship services
  • Oversee and direct the adult music ministry
  • Works with Family Ministries Pastor on design and implementation of age appropriate worship experiences for children and youth
  • Ensure all elements of the worship service support the week’s message
  • Engage the congregation on a spiritual and emotional level
  • Provide leadership and direction to the Magnification Team to ensure the worship center and stage are properly arranged and supplied for worship services
  • Oversee technical team to ensure all equipment is functioning properly
  • Pray for, build up, and minister to those who are involved in worship ministry
  • Lead quarterly development workshops for worship team to increase musical and worship leading skills
  • Engage in personal development activities to improve effectiveness


Key Talents, Abilities, and Personality Traits:

  • Strong desire to glorify God through music, worship, and leadership
  • Musically skilled, particularly vocally and in leading worship, ability to play guitar or piano preferred
  • Experience in running the technical aspects of the worship service and/or leading and developing tech teams
  • Creative: can design contemporary worship services which appeal to a broad demographic
  • Great communication and leadership skills
  • Organized, effective, and detail oriented
  • Proven leader, particularly in the area of leading teams of volunteers
  • Able to work independently
  • Meets deadlines
  • Readily accepts feedback, is always learning, looks for growth opportunities
  • Works well with existing church staff


Position May Be Filled by a stable, mature, fully committed follower of Christ who:

  • Meets all requirements for membership at Western Hills Church and will complete all Core Classes required for membership within 12 months of taking position
  • Fully Supports the Vision and Mission of WHC
  • Has attained a Seminary or Master’s level education (may be in process)
  • Has a minimum of three years of relevant ministry experience


Anticipated Time Commitments – Approximately 20 – 24 hours per week broken down as follows:

  • Preparing and planning worship services (8-10 hours week)
  • Leading worship services and rehearsals (6-8 hours week)
  • Building and leading worship teams including recruiting, team building, and quarterly development events for instrumentalists and vocalists (2-4 hours per week)
  • Work with tech team to ensure smooth Sunday morning services (as needed)
  • Preparing for special worship and events, working with Pastoral Staff to develop worship programs for KaiAlpha and KidCity ministries (as needed)
