Department
Dean of Religious Life - 50200

Position Summary
Position summary:

Reporting to the Dean of Religious Life and of the Chapel, Princeton University seeks an inclusive, engaged, passionate, and effective pastor who, as Associate Dean of Religious Life and of the Chapel, will advance the Office of Religious Life's ministries both across campus and beyond.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

The Associate Dean will assist the aforementioned Dean in leading ecumenical Christian services at the University Chapel each Sunday morning, providing spirited preaching and liturgical offerings, and ministering devotedly to the pastoral needs of the worshiping community.

The Associate Dean will lead the student worshiping community known as Hallelujah Church @ Princeton, a weekly service rooted in the African-American church tradition. The Associate Dean will support the Hallelujah community's pastoral needs, co-curricular fellowship and other activities, and their weekly Bible study.

The Associate Dean will create imaginative and engaging co-curricular programming of interest to the entire University community.

The Associate Dean will lead the weekly Hour of Power service, an opportunity for Christian faculty, staff, students and friends to receive mid-week liturgical nourishment.

The Associate Dean will offer pastoral support and counseling to all who seek it, regardless of religious affiliation.

The Associate Dean will participate fully in the ecumenical, interfaith, and academic ceremonies of Princeton University, offering prayers on such occasions as well as any other necessary support.

The Associate Dean will preside at weddings, funerals, and other religious life-events as requested by community members, including vigils and other observances related to important occasions in the life of the University and wider society.

The Associate Dean will serve as a teaching pastor and field education supervisor to seminarians from Princeton Theological Seminary and other institutions of theological/pastoral education.

The Associate Dean will work collaboratively with the many on-campus partners of the Office of Religious Life, including the University's LGBT Center, Women's Center, Carl A. Fields Center for Equality and Cultural Understanding, University Health Services (including Counseling and Psychological Services), the leaders of other campus religious communities, and the staff and student leaders of graduate and undergraduate student life.

The Associate Dean will oversee the monthly meetings of the Princeton Affiliated Chaplains, as well as the application process for new and continuing affiliated chaplaincies.

The Associate Dean will serve as the direct supervisor to the facilities administrator of the Center for Jewish Life (CLJ).

The Associate Dean will be a valued colleague and engaged participant within the Office of Religious Life and beyond, offering counsel, time, commitment and support to all endeavors.

The Associate Dean will, as much as possible, connect the work of Princeton's Office of Religious Life to local, regional, national, and international partners whose efforts serve the same goals of human uplift, inter-religious partnerships, and inter-community understanding.

Essential Qualifications
The Associate Dean will be a Christian pastor trained, ordained, and willing to lead services (including officiating at Holy Communion) in an ecumenical and interfaith context. Her/his preparation will include a Bachelor's degree plus a Master of Divinity (or equivalent) degree. She/he will have the expansive heart of a pastor and significant, demonstrated prior experience in pastoral leadership, either within a congregational, institutional, or campus setting. The Associate Dean will bring a strong understanding of and commitment to the diversity of global faith expressions, and a passion for encouraging the engagement of religious and other human differences. She/he will bring a high degree of professionalism to the role, and practice both discretion and confidentiality. The Associate Dean will have strong organizational skills, as well as advanced administrative, financial, and communications skills, both written and verbal.
