Job Description:

History:

Located in one of the most desirable suburbs of Chicago, Glen Ellyn Bible Church is harnessing the gift of their history to create a preferred future.

GEBC is primed and ready for growth. The church has adopted a new vision to Engage (see more in Ministry Approach) within the church walls and outside in order to reach and make disciples. The team is very healthy and really likes serving together.

GEBC is growing younger as the church’s vision and mission has been clarified and committed to by the congregation. Eighty percent of the church is raising children (birth-18 years old). Yet it is not uncommon to talk with members who’ve been at GEBC for 15-20 years or longer. These long standing families make up the foundation – spiritual and otherwise – of the church.

In regards to the student ministry, their current student ministries director has been serving in student ministries for 7 years as the middle school director, then as the student ministries director. His family is making a healthy transition to become a full-time missionary in the Dominican Republic (hopefully by January 2016), with the full support of GEBC. Under his leadership, he has laid a solid foundation of programming, curriculum, annual calendar and solid relationships with students and parents.

Crossroads (junior high ministry, 6th-8th grades) averages 20-30 middle school students at Sunday school. On Sunday nights between 25-30 students participate weekly. Summit is the high school ministry. There are about 80 students in small groups and between 35-45 students come to their weekly Wednesday night program.  Overall, they reach into 6-7 high schools and their respective junior high schools.

Ministry Approach:

GEBC’s vision can be summarized into one word: ENGAGE. They desire for every member to engage 1) with one another in fellowship, 2) with the needy in caregiving, 3) with the lost in relationship. You can read more about their vision here: http://www.gebible.org/engage.

You can read more about their mission here: http://www.gebible.org/mission (the visual above is more for internal structure and strategy).

Theologically, they are reformed, complementarian, with touches of charismatic style in their worship. Yet they have staff members from a variety of backgrounds and theological perspectives. They’ve been connected to the Willow Creek Association, as well, over the years.

They have become increasingly outreach oriented with a new Caregiving Center (modeled after Willow Creek’s Care Center) and a contemporary worship service with relevant teaching.

Please visit: http://www.gebible.org/about for helpful info on their vision and mission, history, beliefs, leadership and other FAQs. You can also read their Statement of Faith.

Leadership:

Senior pastor, Kelly Brandie, is dynamic, friendly, and believing leader. He’s engaged and active outside the church walls, including teaching an ethics class at the local community college (College of DuPage) and is on the board for the local Young Life ministry.

In Summer 2015, GEBC hired John Vandervelde as their Executive Pastor. John’s been a church member for 5+ years, was the chairman of the elder board, and was the Executive Director for LeaderTreks for 10 years. His visionary, coaching, and shepherd’s heart has already been a game changer for the church. Under his leadership they developed the Engage strategy and he’s already improved the programming staff’s effectiveness. As an ESFJ, his role is to provide more oversight and development for the staff, provide ministry evaluation, strategy, goal setting. He also meets weekly with all his direct reports. His StrengthsFinders are Woo, Activator, Achiever, Command, and Developer.

GEBC is elder directed and staff led. The elder board is responsible for direction, doctrine, and discipline. They aren’t a board that sits in a conference room, disconnected from the church. They are actively involved in ministries, prayerfully care for the staff, and are responsible for shepherding groups of people at the church.

GEBC has a healthy team and the church loves the staff well. Their current student ministries pastor is leaving at the end of 2015 to go be a missionary in the Dominican Republic with GEBC’s partner ministry there.

In student ministries, they currently have 8 junior high small group leaders and 2 teachers (goal is 2 leaders per group) and 11 high school leaders (goal is 2 leaders per group). They need a bunch more!

Challenge:

The Engage vision is new to this historic church, which requires some change. For example, there is a big need for more volunteers within student ministries and there needs to be more adults, overall, participating in teenagers’ lives.

Opportunity:

GEBC believes this hire is one of the most significant hires they will make in the next 5 years. This is important to them! A strong foundation has been built under the leadership of great youth pastors, several of which are still connected to the overall church.

Perhaps the greatest opportunity is a heart and passion for evangelism. Senior pastor, Kelly, said as a church they must “grow by conversion”. They desire for the ministry to be more committed to “go get students” than just providing opportunities for them to come. Student Ministries needs to be a mile wide and a mile deep, meaning that evangelism and discipleship aren’t in competition with each other but most grow together. Over and over, there people spoke of their desire to normalize evangelism in their church.

Missions have been a strong point to the student ministries. There’s been a ton of momentum with missions. Over 46 students went on a trip this past summer! This is a shining star of the church and definitely needs to be continued (serving within the church, locally, and globally) in the future. As the majority of the students are very affluent and comfortable in their lives, increasingly their worldview is a high value for the church and parents alike.

Finally, there’s a huge opportunity for more student integration into the whole church. The leadership (elders to staff) desire to see students serving throughout the church, not just to serve but to practice their faith and grow in their relationships with other adults in the church.

Student ministries is believed in, supported, and well resourced. From the elder board, to the staff, to parents, they love the student ministries. The annual student ministries budget is $20,000-$25,000/year plus about $20,000 for special event subsidies (ex: retreats, missions) and there are 2 additional part-time staff members to pour into the ministry.
