Northland Christian Church ( is an independent Christian church in Topeka, Kansas. NCC has a rich heritage in north Topeka that began in 1887. Now, more than 120 years later, our ministry has expanded to all areas of Topeka and the surrounding communities, as well as ministry partnerships across the globe.


Lead Pastor Job Description


Principal Function


The Lead Pastor/Minister is responsible to the church to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ; to glorify God by engaging the body into relationship with Christ through the proclamation of his word; equipping His people to prepare them to be empowered to fulfill Christ’s mission; to engage in pastoral care ministries; to provide administrative leadership in all areas of church life; and to act as the Lead Pastor/Minister of the Pastoral and Administrative staff.


Required Qualifications


  • Must be a licensed or ordained minister of the Gospel
  • Demonstrate appropriate theological, doctrinal, and administrative skill to adequately fulfill the requirements of the position
  • Proven record of developing, nurturing, and leading that resulted in successes
  • The ability to connect with people
  • Good communication skills
  • The ability to motivate and inspire staff and church members



Preferred Qualifications


  • A bachelor’s degree in Christian ministry
  • A master’s degree in Christian ministry
  • Ten (10) years’ experience in pastoral care
  • Two or three (2-3) years’ experience as a lead/senior pastor
  • Three to five (3-5) years’ experience in a multi-staff church


Spiritual Requirements


The lead pastor shall:


  • Have accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior
  • Agree with, initial and sign, the Northland Christian Church Statement of Faith. (attached)
  • Be filled with the Spirit and wisdom and have a good reputation (Acts 6:3)
  • Have a measure of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)
  • Be a man of prayer (Ephesians 6:18) and reflection (Philippians 4:8)
  • Be a man of personal integrity, whose family life is in order, and have a proven record of manifesting God’s love, treating others as he wished to be treated (I Timothy 3:2-7)
  • Shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness (1 Peter 5:2, NASB)


Requirements of the Position


  • Be gifted as a spiritual leader and Shepherd/overseer of the congregation
  • Agrees with and actively supports the church vision
  • Provides leadership for the pastoral staff with purpose, direction, encouragement, support and evaluation of individual ministries
  • Works with church leaders, program directors, and church committees in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of church ministries
  • Represents the church and cooperates with local, state, and national leaders in matters of mutual interest and concern; keeps the church informed of such developments
  • Maintains good two-way communication with the staff, Elders and Congregation
  • Oversees the administration of the church
  • Performs requirements common to all pastors
  • Performs other requirements as assigned by the Elders


Working Relationships


The lead pastor will report to the Elders. He will have direct supervision and accountability for the pastoral and administrative staff. This pastor will work directly or indirectly with volunteers. He will also have contact as a leader with the congregation, pastors in other churches, para-church organizations, missionaries, business owners and staff, and community leaders.


Duties of the Position


  • Oversee weekly (or as needed) staff meetings
  • Oversee the daily operation of the church, including the efficient use of all resources
  • Oversee the adherence of the various policies, including (but not limited to) those in the Salary Administration, Staff and Office, and Facility Use
  • Oversee yearly performance evaluation of pastoral staff
  • Work with the Elders, Finance Committee, and other committees as required in preparing the annual budget
  • Oversee the adherence to the annual budget
  • Attend meetings with the Elders
  • Attend our informational Town Hall meetings
  • Oversee pastoral staff to ensure representation in all ministry areas (i.e. Youth, Church, CE Classes, Benevolence, Visitation, etc.)
  • Attend various church functions as schedule permits.
  • Oversee and coordinate the worship services
  • Schedule weekly sermon assignments
  • Ensure the observance of the ordinances of the church (Baptism and Lord’s Supper)
  • Serve as a resource for all standing or ad hoc committees
  • Cooperate with local community services, and local churches in serving the community
  • Facilitate and enhance the connectivity of the church’s staff to its congregation for the purpose of addressing the individual needs of the congregation
  • Other duties as assigned by the Elders
