ASSOCIATE PASTOR OF WORSHIP/DISCIPLESHIP
GREEN RIDGE BAPTIST CHURCH
I. BE A PASTOR
PASTOR THE CHURCH IN COORDINATION WITH THE OTHER PASTORS AND UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE LEAD PASTOR
This staff member is a pastor in the full meaning of the word. He is expected to have a heart and mind that is passionate for the health, growth, and overall Gospel impact of the church, locally and globally. He is to do this through interaction with people,
planning and input with the pastoral team, and execution of those plans in coordination with the total church family. As a pastor, he is expected to visit and care for the people, developing them to serve the Lord in various capacities in the life of the
church and in the context of their own personal lives. He must be able to preach and teach the Word of God with exegetical excellence, doctrinal soundness, compassion for people and Holy Spirit inspired passion.
There are several key components to the work of this pastor:
- Administrative. Effective communication with other staff members and other leaders in the life of the church is required.
- Theological. This person will be expected to grow personally and professionally as he serves the Lord at Green Ridge.
- Missional. This component should grow as one develops theologically. This pastor is expected to be evangelistic, not because he has to but because he wants to.
- Training/Equipping. He is expected to work with others in equipping them for their particular calling and just living out the gospel in every area of their life.
- Preaching/Teaching. This component is critical to this role.
As a pastor, this person will be in the office and available for church members and other staff communication as needed. He will be expected to look at the church calendar, think strategically and integrate all the aspects of the life of the church into
his thinking, adding a missional heart and mind to the thinking of the church staff.
This person is a full-fledged pastor whose main responsibilities are worship and discipleship leadership. But his responsibilities do not end with worship and discipleship. He is a pastor (also called elder) and is expected to have a concern for every
component of the life of the church. We need someone to help us fulfill the Great Commission as the body of Christ. As such, this person would be expected to do all the work of a pastor (visit, pray, study, prepare, plan, counsel, minister, preach, teach,
love people, and work hard).
As a pastor/elder, we would expect this person to lead his family to walk with Christ and be gospel-centered and missional in their living.
II. LEAD THE CHURCH TO GROW DEEPER AND STRONGER IN DISCIPLESHIP
WORK WITH THE PASTORAL TEAM IN PLANNING AND DEVELOPING THE OVERALL DISCIPLESHIP MINISTRY OF THE CHURCH
This would involve developing and teaching others in various settings, both formal and informal. It would require the personal equipping of others to teach and lead, and it would involve some teaching of classes along the way (Green Ridge has Transform
Classes on Sunday nights and LIFE Groups that meet in homes during the week). This means that this person would need to continue to stay informed as to what is available for use in this setting in the local church. The theological and missional foundations
for this work are essential. This area will require some creative thinking with respect to content AND methodology as we engage today’s changing culture. At Green Ridge, we want to develop people with a genuine relationship to Jesus that are serious about
living gospel-centered lives. This will require the development of close relationships with people through which the Word and the Holy Spirit can work. One area of need at Green Ridge is the continued development of people who are missional in their personal
lives and actually do the work of personal evangelism in their life. We also need to develop the concept of servant evangelism in our community. All this would be under the parameters of the discipleship ministry of the church.
III. LEAD THE CHURCH TO WORSHIP GOD
A. PLAN AND HELP EXECUTE QUALITY WORSHIP EXPERIENCES FOR THE GREEN RIDGE FAMILY-LEAD THE BODY TO CONNECT WITH THE LORD IN WORSHIP
This would involve putting together a heart for the Word (theological soundness) with a passion for the church’s mission and seeking to help the church engage the Living God in a quality worship experience on a consistent weekly basis. This person would
work with the pastors in planning each week, and he would be expected to learn new music and stay fresh musically and theologically through his own personal engagement with the Scriptures regularly. It is important that this person actually worship the Lord
God himself as he leads the church each week. There needs to be a contagious joy and awe present, and this person can help the church have that joy as he leads. This component is very important for ALL the aspects of this person’s work. Successful engagement
with people and development of encouraging relationships will afford this pastor freedom to work on other areas of need in the life of the church.
B. WORK WITH THE ADULT CHOIR AND OTHER AGE GRADED CHOIRS
Lead the choir practice each week and/or when preparing to sing in a worship experience. Work with the children’s and preschool choir leaders developing them and making sure they are doing well with their respective groups. Recruit and train leaders for
these choirs as needed. Meet with them to build rapport and a sense of team throughout the year.
Select music for the Adult Choir and the church to use in their praise to the Lord. This will require that this person stay current as to new music. We at Green Ridge would want this person to also use the theologically sound hymns from the past in various
C. DEVELOP AND LEAD PRAISE TEAMS AND OTHER ENSEMBLES TO HELP THE CHURCH IN ITS WORSHIP EXPERIENCE
This involves planning and learning new music that can be integrated into the various worship teams in the church. These worship teams and ensembles would develop over time. This would, of course, involve practice times with the instruments etc., on a regular
D. DEVELOP AND LEAD THE INSTRUMENTAL TEAMS IN THE CHURCH
Green Ridge presently has a Brass/Woodwind Ensemble that helps lead in worship once every 4-6 weeks. The group is made up of adults and teenagers who play an instrument and desire to lead God’s people in worship.
E. COORDINATE THE SCHEDULING OF THE MEDIA BOOTH AND ALL ASSOCIATED WORK: PROJECTION EQUIPMENT, POWERPOINT, CAMERA AND RECORDING, SOUND, LIGHTING
This area is about team development and working with them and encouraging them to learn to do their task with excellence. The key would be developing relationships in this area and not basing everything solely on technical excellence. Leading in these
areas would require a good working knowledge of everything in each area, and it would require some training of some of the members of each team. It is the responsibility of the worship/discipleship pastor to recruit people for these various ministries and
coordinate their work.
F. WORK WITH THE LEADERS IN ALL THE AREAS OF YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO DEVELOP AN ANNUAL MINISTRY PLAN
This is more than a budget, but it is an attachment of some monetary value to an action or an item that is related to gospel fulfillment. This will require some strategic thinking about what each area needs to accomplish as they move forward for Christ.
Develop an annual ministry plan for your main areas of concern, worship and discipleship. Be a responsible steward of the Lord’s money and give an account of what is spent and why it is spent. Turn in your requests for checks to be written in a timely manner
(minimum monthly, preferably twice a month).
G. HELP DEVELOP WORSHIP/MUSIC TEAMS FOR OTHER SITES AND FUTURE CHURCH PLANTS
H. WORK WITH THE OTHER PASTORS TO DEVELOP MISSION TEAMS (TRIPS) FROM GREEN RIDGE TO NORTH AMERICA AND AROUND THE WORLD
This has a definite discipleship component to it, as well as a missional component.
