Job Description:

 

HISTORY

CVCHURCH was founded in 1952 by Don Pickerill and was originally known as The First Foursquare Church of La Crescenta.  The congregation met for three years in the Crescenta Valley American Legion Hall before moving into their first facility in 1955.  By 1962, construction was completed on a new auditorium and separate Christian education building.  Since then, the church has acquired and completely renovated two other buildings next door that serve as the Nursery building and Youth Ministry building. 

The current Senior/Lead Pastors Scott and Kathe Wood came to CVCHURCH in 1992 when only 20-30 people attended.  They brought intense energy and passion for God’s Word, and the desire to see everyone in this community get the chance to discover their true purpose in life through the Purpose-Driven Church paradigm.  Scott is a gifted teacher who thrives giving Biblical guidance to struggling people and knows how to make the Bible relevant to the everyday lives of people today.  Kathe is a gifted worship leader who has written worship songs that have been sung all over the world.  Together, they have built a strong staff of long-serving leaders who are committed to the vision and people of CVCHURCH.   

 

CURRENT STATUS OF OVERALL CHURCH

Today, CVCHURCH has an average weekly attendance of 450-500 people per weekend (including all age groups) that are both multiethnic and multigenerational, reflecting the rich diversity of the Los Angeles area.  Families with children make up the core of the congregation, and there has been an increase of attendance among young adults and empty-nesters.  CVCHURCH is committed to transformation for both the individual and the community and have embraced the Purpose-Driven paradigm, balancing the five purposes of worship (celebration), fellowship (membership), discipleship (maturity), serving (ministry), and outreach (mission).

 

Recovery ministry has been an important strength and emphasis for the church, and CVCHURCH is known in the community as a “hospital for the hurting.”  This recovery/relational approach to ministry has been a dynamic part of the church’s ministry.  Worship and the arts have also flourished through a celebratory Sunday worship experience led by a fantastic and diverse worship team of next generation leaders and a monthly music gathering called “Strings & Beans” that hosts local artists.  The children’s ministry (Kids’ Place) has enjoyed incredible success in attracting and serving young families and has a strong track record of leadership and volunteer service.

The youth ministry (EPICC Youth) recently renovated the youth ministry building with state-of-the-art technology and equipment as a multi-use indoor worship space and an outdoor café-style environment.  A comprehensive renovation plan is in the works for the rest of the entire campus, and is expected to commence in the Spring of 2016.

 

LOCATION / DEMOGRAPHIC

CVCHURCH is located in the unincorporated community of La Crescenta-Montrose in the city of Glendale.  Known as a “destination suburb” in Los Angeles County, La Crescenta-Montrose is a largely residential, upper middle-class suburban community that has a high population of families with children.  The local school district has been recognized with distinction at every level, and both Rosemont Middle School and Crescenta Valley High School have been named National Blue Ribbon schools and California Gold Ribbon schools.  The CVCHURCH campus is located within a few miles of both schools. 

 

CVCHURCH draws primarily from La Crescenta-Montrose, Glendale, Tujunga, and Sunland—all suburbs of Los Angeles.  The median cost of a home in that area is approximately $605k.  Demographically, the area continues to become more diverse ethnically and culturally, with increasing Asian, Armenian, Latino, and African-American populations.  The congregation at CVCHURCH is a strong reflection of the diversity of the community and has been intentional about supporting and celebrating this diversity.

 

The church is located in the beautiful foothills of the Angeles National Forest but is only 15 miles away from downtown Los Angeles and 12 miles away from Burbank Airport. 

 

STUDENT MINISTRY APPROACH

EPICC Youth is all about helping teens find out how important their lives are and to show them practically how to follow Jesus and help others do the same.  Leaders are focused on loving Jesus and creating a safe and fun place for teens to belong, believe, and become.  EPICC Youth is centered on biblical teaching and focused on personal relationships, making sure that youth grow in Christ and have a lot of fun along the way!

 

EPICC Youth meets on Sunday mornings for two services in a combined environment for junior high and high school students and midweek in two separate programs for junior high and high school.  These programs include large group teaching relevant for youth, small groups where you can grow deeper in relationships and in faith, and fun events for fellowship and outreach.  A strong group of adult volunteers serve every week, loving students by helping to lead groups and plan events and even cooking for the midweek youth programs.  EPICC Youth also goes to camp every summer and winter, creating more opportunities for youth to experience Jesus.

 

EPICC Youth also has been serving consistently in different outreaches (Walter Hoving Recovery Home) and partnering with Christian clubs at the local high schools and middle school.  This has been great for students to engage their faith outside the walls of the church.  EPICC Youth doesn’t want to just be a ministry to students, but instead wants to be a ministry by students.  This is a great opportunity for a Youth Director/Pastor to build teams of volunteers and student leaders that will grow this ministry together.   

 

 

CHALLENGE AND OPPORTUNITY 

Overall, the challenge for the incoming Youth Director/Pastor will be to build trust with leaders, parents, and students.  The leadership and families at CVCHURCH would like the new Youth Director/Pastor to be an integral part of the team and thriving member of the church.  Alignment in heart and ministry philosophy with the Senior Pastor and the rest of the staff will be critical for success in this role. 

 

Within the youth ministry itself, the challenge will be to build a consistent youth ministry in partnership with students, parents, and adult volunteers.  Instead of operating as a “one-person show,” the Youth Director/Pastor will need to build teams that will execute the vision and follow through on the ministry plan.  While there many parents and adult volunteers who would like to be involved and better utilized, they have yet to be fully empowered and equipped to serve and lead in the youth ministry.  Likewise, there are current and potential student leaders who have yet to be equipped and released to serve, to lead both inside and outside the walls of the church.

 

CVCHURCH is a vibrant Spirit-filled church that is all about helping people transform and grow in Christ.  The Sunday worship experience is full of energy and passion and far exceeds what you would expect at a church of their size.  Many newcomers have commented that the church feels like the “biggest mid-size church you’ve ever been to.”  The pastors and leadership at CVCHURCH are heavily invested in the church and in the community and are eager to support the growth of the youth ministry in order to reach the large number of students in the area.   

 

The person who steps into this role will not be left to do ministry on his or her own.  There are already faithful parents and adult volunteers who love and invest in students and want to play a bigger role.  The Youth Director/Pastor will be able to build teams and partner with other adults so that the entire church body is involved in loving and ministering to youth.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

 

1. Create and teach Biblically-relevant lessons

  • For middle school students and high school students on Wednesday Nights in two (2) separate environments
  • For 2 Sunday morning youth services
  • Create lessons, outreach events, and service opportunities that highlight the 5 purposes of EPICC Youth Ministry as a purpose-driven ministry
  • Create and deliver lessons appropriate to their age.
  • Create same-gender small groups after the lesson where by students can share and pray for one another.
  • Integrate The Landing youth recovery ministry concepts into the teachings and cross-promote on a regular basis to address at-risk youth issues

 

 2.   Create a safe and fun environment

  • Mid-week fun events involving games and team-building exercises
  • Sunday morning fun events like Valentine’s Day Party or Happy Birthday Jesus party that make evangelism user-friendly for students
  • Build deep relationships with students via text and birthday lunches
  • Build strong relationships with parents and volunteers by connecting with parents before and after youth services.
  • Implement Biblical discipline by setting healthy boundaries with consequences in a grace-based environment
 

 3.   Recruit and develop volunteer leaders

  • Pray for new leaders
  • Recruit parental help as teachers and drivers
  • Seek out new adult volunteers
  • Develop volunteer leaders through small groups and vision casting
  • Implement a volunteer covenant for 3-month commitments
  • Focus on recruiting parent volunteers for each event and service
 

 4.   Communicate

  • Communicate with the senior pastor (challenges and praise reports)
  • Communicate with parents (lessons and events)
  • Communicate with youth ministry volunteer leaders
  • Communicate with middle and high school students weekly via mass text

 5.  Lead and organize events

  • Calendar the events for the whole year with the calendar administrator
  • Calendar the curriculum and programs for the year (ex: an annual series on love and a series on the life of King David)
  • Calendar the ministry events for the year (ex: Walter Hoving Recovery Home or Mount View Retirement Community)
  • Calendar youth Summer and Winter camp
  • Organize fund raisers for camps and other events
  • Manage and complete all camp forms
 

 6.   Campus ministry

  • Visit, teach, and reach students at Rosemont Middle School
  • Visit, teach, and reach students at Clark Magnet High School
  • Visit, teach, and reach students at Crescenta Valley High School
  • Distribute flyers at schools
  • Connect with students in our youth ministry on campus
 

 7.   Create and manage youth ministry budget

  • Allocate and manage funds for worship (Elevate)
  • Allocate and manage funds for ministry (Provide)
  • Allocate and manage funds for evangelism (Invite)
  • Allocate and manage funds for fellowship (Connect)
  • Allocate and manage funds for discipleship (Christ-Like)
  • Allocate and manage funds for leadership expenses and appreciation gifts (Christmas gifts and birthday lunches, gas for driving, etc.)
 

 8.   Lead youth assistant

  • Manage the budgeted hours of the youth assistant
  • Create a job description for youth assistant that includes:

-        Rehearse for worship as a team

-        Find new games for the youth

-        Buy items for games or crafts

-        Find new worship songs for the youth

-        Raise new musicians

-        Recruit singers and musicians

-        Communicate with worship team

-        Order items for special Sundays (ex: devotional books, equipment)

-        Purchase food, prizes, games, for special events

  • Create a task list of things that must get done (ex: organize youth closet or wash dirty dishes used by EPICC, etc.).
  • Create an organized run sheet for services, events, and camps

 

COMPENSATION PACKAGE:

o    Total compensation negotiable based on experience and education ?

o    $42-45K salary range ?

o    Entire package may be proportioned to accommodate the needs of person including health insurance and other benefits
