The Journey is a real church for real people. With a reputation for authenticity, the sole purpose of its existence is to help people find Jesus and to follow him fully, in three vital environments: gathering, connecting, and serving.

The Journey began out of a passion for reaching people with the life-giving message of Jesus, especially those who had never experienced church or had given up on it. Their passion was to be a “simple church”, focused on a clear culture, with easy on-ramps for people to grow.

The Journey seeks a Director of Ministry Operations who will serve as a developmental strategist, directly facilitating all aspects of ministry operations of The Journey. This individual will be an organization-builder and a high capacity 'foreman', possessing a strong leadership gift, with the skills to scale. They will oversee the areas of human resources, finance, stewardship and giving, office management/ administration, current and future campus planning, and legal affairs of the church. The Director of Ministry Operations will assist with overall leadership and direction of all operational aspects of the church.

The ideal candidate for this position will possess a minimum of five years in high-level ministry experience as an executive or ministry leader and a decision maker in an organizational environment. They will demonstrate a proven track record of leadership competence, effective management, stellar character, strong team chemistry, with a clear calling to ministry, in alignment with the mission, vision, culture, and core values of The Journey. An undergraduate degree in business, management, technology, or a related field is required, with a preference given to those possessing graduate level coursework or a degree.

The Hiring & Staffing Manifesto of The Journey

  • We hire the best people – 'An A-team with B-ideas is better than a B-team with A-ideas.'
  • We hire on proof, not just potential – We care more about what they have done than what they can do.
  • We approach candidates with a healthy skepticism – We chase any question marks and uncertainties until we find resolution. We are not afraid of finding something negative about a candidate.
  • We put candidates in environments before we put them in positions – We ask our candidates to attend staff meetings, participate in area meetings, stick around on weekends, etc.
  • We pay them what they are worth. Period. – We don’t offer enough to just 'get by.'
  • We find candidates who are emotionally elite – We want people who are at peace with the past, undaunted by the present, and optimistic about the future. They can handle stress and deadlines without skipping a beat.
  • We enter mutually beneficial relationships; it has to be the right decision for them and us – We believe it is a tremendous stewardship responsibility to place people in the right role that uses their strengths and gifts. Our goal is not just for us to grow; it is for them to grow here as well.
  • We value honesty and vulnerability – We know “Real Church for Real People” starts with our staff, so we look for real people. We want someone who knows they are not perfect and who is willing to open up about their struggles and imperfections fairly easily.
  • We do not make false promises – We are not in the business of toying with people’s emotions. We’re honest and transparent at each step of the process, and we don’t make any promises until after an offer letter.
  • We hire people who would do it for free (and whenever possible, people who already are) – We believe that a paycheck can reward ministry, but never create it. We are unapologetic about this.
Newark, Delaware was settled and founded in 1758. Known for its picturesque country side and bustling city life, Newark is located 12 miles Southwest of Wilmington, DE and half way between Philadelphia, PA and Baltimore, MD. The community is widely transient due to this rapidly shifting student demographic at the University of Delaware. Newark predominantly serves considerably large white-collar occupations, led by the industries of education, management, and the food industry, that significantly contribute to the thriving business economy of the state. Newark is also home to the largest hospital in the state of Delaware and its local mall boasts the second highest grossing Apple store in America. Based on the 2013 U.S. Census statistics, the median income of the city is largely lower than the state average of $57,846 with the median housing value in Newark set at $270,649. The racial demographics of the city indicate Caucasian at 75.3%, African American at 8.7%, and Asian at 8.1%. Over the years, the city has become a dining and shopping destination, merging notable history, an eclectic ‘foodie’ culture, casual coffee shops, and a trendy lifestyle that attracts both students and residents alike.
