Job Description:

The Kids Ministry Pastor serves as the pastoral leader of Mars Hill’s [MH] Kids Ministry, and collaboratively
creates, develops, implements and assesses a theologically sound, developmentally appropriate and
missionally focused formational vision that unifies the MH Kids Team [babies, preschool and elementary]
and is integrated into the broader Mars Hill Ministry Vision.
The Kids Ministry Pastor leads the MH Kids Ministry staff, directs MH Babies and Preschool ministries,
serves young children and their families, and informs the broader community of adolescent issues.
QUALIFICATIONS + EXPERIENCE
Professional
Minimum of 5 years of pastoral experience in children’s ministry [Early Childhood experience preferred]
Passion for providing compelling opportunities for children and families to learn about God
 
Servant leader who is effective and enjoys identifying, developing, equipping and encouraging
volunteers
Passion for excellence and continuous development, as well as learning in all aspects of children’s
ministry [kids, families, volunteers, leaders, teams, ideas, programming]
Demonstrated spirit for strategic exploration, innovation, and change
 
Proven ability to create and successfully implement new programs
Highly relational deriving energy from and drawing others into community
Ability to engage difficult issues and individuals, courageously shepherding people toward wholeness
Ability to equip and encourage parents to spiritually nurture their children
Education Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in a ministry, education or related field required, Master’s degree in aTheological field preferred [MA, MTS, ThM, MDiv]
 
Conversant in faith formation of children with an emphasis on Early Childhood issues [spiritual,
theological, sociological, developmental, cultural]
 
Knowledge of and exposure to adult related pastoral care ministries
[to pastorally care for parents and families]
Theological/Philosophical
 
A worldview that is aligned with the vision, mission, directions, and narrative theology of Mars Hill
 
Able to synthesize and think critically about spiritual, theological, developmental, and sociological issues associated with the church and Mars Hill Kids ministry, emphasizing Early Childhood Personal
 
Demonstrates a deep and consistent rule of life for all things formational
 
Models a way of life [philosophies and conduct] that inspires others to follow
 
Practices a healthy and holistic lifestyle
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
1.  Provide Leadership for MH Kids Ministries [Babies through 4th grade]
 
Engage and oversee MH Kids Ministries Staff in the development of theologically and developmentally sound content [curriculum and programming] and contexts [small groups, large groups, discipleship]
 
Ensure alignment of the Kids Ministries’ vision with the larger missional identity and formational vision of Mars Hill
 
Present Mars Hill Kids Ministry and its vision to staff, volunteers, students and parents, talk about
it directly and indirectly, formally and informally in every possible situation, cont
inually invite and challenge individuals to be fully invested in the ministry
 
Create and promote a culture and mindset which embraces and upholds the significance of volunteers
 
Lead efforts to recruit, connect and shepherd volunteers serving in the ministry
2.  Collaboratively Lead, Coach, and Develop the MH Kids Ministry staff
POSITION DESCRIPTION KIDS MINISTRY PASTOR
 
Develop the Kids Ministry Team [individually and as a team] for the Ministry, accurately assess
skills and experience and place individuals in roles and on teams according to abilities and passions
 
Invest in each Kids Team member, provide vision, direction, standards, and knowledge
 
Regularly evaluate individual performance in informal conversation and formal performance
reviews, provide opportunities for growth and train and coach individuals in areas where
performance improvements are necessary
3.
Lead, Develop and Nurture the MH’s Kids Ministries Volunteer Culture
 
Foster and model pastoral relationships and leadership for kids, parents, families and volunteers
 
Collaborate with MH Kids Staff and other MH Staff in designing and delivering on a yearly volunteer
training arc
Collaborate with MH Kids Staff to create, implement and monitor strategies, processes, and
policies for the development for safe relational environments for kids, families and volunteers
4. Lead MH’s Babies + Preschool Ministries Birth-Young 5 year olds]
 
Set vision, goals, and expectations of the Babies and Preschool ministry and monitor performance
against established goals
 
Design programs, structures and schedules that support and respond to kids, volunteers, and families
 
Develop structures and processes that support safe and effective relational environments for the
children in Babies and Preschool [Rooms, Room Leaders, Shepherd Groups, etc.]
 
Recruit, interview, and place new Babies and Preschool volunteers and provide for continuing training and evaluation of existing volunteers
 
Develop content that is theologically sound, developmentally appropriate and culturally relevant
 
Create teaching arcs and programming that cultivates the spiritual formation of HS/PHS students
 
Develop, identify, select and provide resources that nurtures spiritual formation for the children, parents and families in the Babies and Preschool Ministry
 
Provide direct pastoral and programmatic leadership to weekly Babies and Preschool Ministry Programming
5.  Participate as a Member of the Mars Hill Pastoral Team
 
Anticipate and respond pastorally to the needs [care and crisis]of those in your care
 
Provide pastoral care, crisis management, crisis intervention, and resource connection
 
Carry out pastoral responsibilities [as needed and as available] such as: weddings, funerals, child
dedication services, baptisms, pastoral appointments, visitations, mentoring, Sunday care, and on
-call responsibilities
 
Availability and presence on Sunday mornings if not present in the MH KidsMinistry, providing proactive and responsive care
 
Train other staff and volunteer pastors in a specific area of expertise as appropriate
 
Provide a “pastoral voice” during Sunday mornings, teaching 1 or 2 times per year
6.
Participate as a Fully Invested Member of the MH Kids + Students Team and Larger Mars Hill Team
 
Participate in ministry wide events and activities as necessary
 
Participate and take personal initiative in staff development and educational opportunities, maintaining an excellent understanding of early childhood development and culture
 
Teach the underlying vision and theology driving MH Kids Ministry program strategy in all available areas of the Mars Hill community
 
Attend scheduled team meetings
 
Assist with tasks and projects as they arise
 
Participate in cross functional ministry teams
 
Perform other duties as assigned or required
