Job Description:

HISTORY

Located in the fast-developing Minneapolis suburb of Andover, Minnesota, Constance Free Church has historical roots dating back over 100 years. Its rich heritage of quality Bible teaching, strong family ministries, and a heartfelt desire to impact the community continues to this day.

Constance has been led by four pastors, including its current senior pastor, Randy Discher—who has led the church since 1986—for the majority of its existence. Under Pastor Randy’s leadership, Constance has experienced significant growth.

In 1995, Constance relocated to their current home on 52 acres, which has since been developed into a beautiful sprawling campus of over 81,000 square feet of well-designed ministry space. The church is strategically located in one of the fastest growing areas of town. The current auditorium was completed in 2004 and includes a full theatrical stage (including fly space and wings) as well as comfortable theatre-style seating. It is well-equipped with updated sound, lights, and video technology that complements 21st century, modern worship experiences.

While the congregation is made up of 60% baby boomers, the fastest growing demographic of the church is young families, 25-35 years of age. The community continues to be drawn to this friendly church for its commitment to practical Bible-based teaching and exceptional children’s and youth ministries. There is also strong engagement with various social service agencies, school districts and other government agencies that gives Constance a unique presence in the community.

The rich heritage of the church includes a highly trusted and competent staff. Of the current 13 full-time ministry employees, 11 have served at Constance for three or more years. A long standing tradition of faithful and committed High School Pastors have paved the way for the next High School Pastor to build upon a solid foundation as well as venture into new endeavors with this ministry. Change is not feared at Constance, it is welcomed as a part of the Holy Spirit’s guiding the church.

CURRENT STATUS OF OVERALL CHURCH

Constance Free Church is a multi-generational congregation that attracts people of all ages, from young families to empty nesters. While they have adopted a two-style worship service format (“Traditions” and “The Current”), the majority of its 1,300 adults attend The Current, a contemporary/modern worship experience held in the main auditorium of the church.

During these services the Student Ministries (Middle & High School) host a service designed for their specific age groups upstairs. In addition to this weekly service the High School ministry has a strong house group model in place. This has been a strength in the past that connects over 200 high school students weekly. This model was successful under the previous leaders, but is not a fixed model that has to remain. This is a season of transition and change for the High School Ministry and will require a highly collaborative and visionary leader to guide them moving forward.

There is a desire to embrace the thought process of Sticky Faith in order to incorporate a more family based model in the ministry. This is not to be prescriptive to the ministries in regards to curriculum, but rather a posture of heart and trajectory of ministry that is focused on the student and their family.

LOCATION / DEMOGRAPHIC

Andover is a highly sought-after suburb of Minneapolis. It currently draws more young families than any other part of the region. It is a safe, family-friendly community known for its quality schools and parks.

The greater Twin Cities area is also known for its cultural arts, outdoor recreational opportunities, great restaurants, and exceptional shopping, from several “Main Street” village settings to the Mall of America. The stereotype of Minnesotans being “nice” is a reality, not only at Constance, but also throughout the community.

All of this makes Andover an attractive place to live and play, offering a quality of life well suited for young families. Many who relocate to the area fall in love with the place and the people, and ultimately plant deep roots.

STUDENT MINISTRY APPROACH

Currently Constance has an incredible house group ministry that meets during the week and a weekly service for their High School that meets during service on Sunday. The middle and high school ministries have operated in separate lanes and have been successful in doing so, but this transition in High School pastor is providing the opportunity for a new design in ministry philosophy and practice that will foster more collaboration in the future while reaching students and their families. The new High School Pastor and Middle School Pastor will report to Randy Ahlberg who is the Pastor of Community Ministries. Randy has a long history of Pastoral Ministry and is uniquely gifted to serve in this capacity. He is an encourager and an ally for this role as a preferred future is crafted.

Constance has done a great job of thinking through its current state of the ministry to students and identifying the need for a motivated, “hands-on” Youth Pastor who can oversee their High School ministry and be a shepherd to students while connecting with their families and the community at large.

Therefore, Constance needs a strong collaborative leader who can provide fresh vision and lead the student ministry into a greater season of effectiveness and growth. This position requires a person that possesses vision, energy, passion, dynamic communication skills, and a desire to connect with the youth and families of Constance and the community, while also representing the ministry to the congregation at large.

The open Youth Pastor position at Constance Church presents an opportunity for an experienced, energetic and motivated leader for the following reasons: 1) There is a desire to see the ministry evolve into a more current and effective model, 2) student ministry is important to the health and vitality of Constance and 3) the youth ministry will be equipped with resources and support to provide first class ministry programs.

This is an incredible opportunity for a Youth Pastor to rebuild a ministry while working within a phenomenal staff structure in a healthy church that is poised to reach an entire community for Christ. For a person with vision and the desire to build a ministry program this is an incredible opportunity to take an adequate youth ministry to exceptional.

CHALLENGE AND OPPORTUNITY

Constance has had a history of longevity in their past 3 High School pastors. This new addition will have the opportunity to help shape, guide and determine what the next season of ministry will look like. They will be the face of the high school ministry and given voice within the church. They will have a seat at the table and be given the opportunity to both grow and contribute. There is a need for this position to be strong in building teams and fostering relationships among the other departments, but most importantly with the incredible volunteers that surround this ministry. The church will champion a leader who seeks to lead and implement change.

This position will have to be collaborative and work well in a setting that embraces systems and strategic

thinking to propel the mission of the church forward. This is a strength of Constance—strategic thinking that enables ministries to thrive.

The stage is set for a remarkable ministry to emerge with the right leader in place. The leadership and congregation are poised for a dynamic leader to join the team and bring new life into this ministry that so many care about. The current structure has set the stage for a “hands-on” and energetic leader who will be even more effective for the next season. Both staff and volunteers who are already in place will prove to be exciting teammates for a High School Pastor with vision and insight into this ministry. For a dynamic Pastor whose leadership matches the direction of the church at large, the sky is the limit. In conclusion, Constance needs an experienced leader who has experienced fruitfulness in previous ministry endeavors and who also has a professional “edge” from the platform. The new youth leader of Constance Church First needs to be the “voice” of the ministry, and the link to a new season of growth – both in quality of ministry and reach into the community.
