The Director of Children and Youth Ministry (DoCYM) is responsible for the development, guidance and oversight of Children and Youth Christian Education and activities under the guidance of the Pastoral staff. The level of effort throughout
a year will vary according to the season and activities involved. This is a full-time salaried position at $40,000 per year.
The DoCYM is responsible for the review, development, implementation and maintenance of programs for children and youth in grades K - 12 in all ministry areas of the church.

Detailed Job Description for Director of Children and Youth Ministries
a. Full-time staff position.
b. Education/Experience: College degree preferred and three to five years experience.
c. The Director of Children and Youth Ministries (DoCYM) is responsible for development,
administration, supervision, and leadership of programs for children, youth and their families in
the areas of Christian education, discipleship, mission, and outreach.
d. This position is responsible and subject to United Methodist policy and doctrine, informed by
the United Methodist Guidelines for Youth Ministries and Sydenstricker United Methodist
Church (SUMC) policies as determined by the Charge Conference, Senior Pastor, and Staff
Parish Relations Committee (SPRC).
e. The DoCYM reports to the Senior Pastor for spiritual and ministry guidance. Attendance is
expected at weekly staff meetings, special meetings called by the Senior Pastor and SPRC.
The Senior Pastor may periodically request attendance at a Church Council meeting. The
Senior Pastor, in cooperation with SPRC, will conduct an annual evaluation of job performance.
2. OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES
a. The Director of Children and Youth Ministry (DoCYM) is responsible for the development,
guidance and oversight of Children and Youth Christian education and activities under the
guidance of the Pastoral staff.
b. The DoCYM is responsible for providing timely information to be included in the weekly
Worship Bulletin, in the monthly newsletter The Steeple, on the church web site, and electronic
reminders to program participants.
c. In the area of Children and Youth Ministry, the DoCYM is responsible for review,
development, implementation and maintenance of programs for children and youth in grades
K - 12. This includes planning, developing, and implementing all aspects of balanced ministry
for children and youth in the areas of group building, worship, discipleship, mission, and
d. In the area of Children and Youth Christian Education, the DoCYM is responsible for the
comprehensive approach to Christian Education for all Children and Youth. The DoCYM will
coordinate curriculum selection and tracking attendance of children and youth in grades K - 12
Christian Education classes.
e. The DoCYM will serve as the staff representative on the Nursery Committee.
f. The DoCYM will facilitate Children’s Ministry Council by holding meetings, helping to empower
volunteers with ways to implement their ideas in children’s ministry and leading them in decision
making for children’s ministry to include Vacation Bible School (VBS).
3. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
a. Children and Youth Activities
1). Coordinate the planning, implementation and maintenance of comprehensive programs for
mission, service and outreach for grades K-12. The DoCYM shall:
a). Publish annual calendar for each age group.
b). Administer children mission activities for K-5.
c). Coordinate the planning and implementing of weekly activities/gatherings, ensuring
that programs are balanced (fellowship, outreach and evangelism, service/mission,
relational and spiritual).
d). Select and administer summer youth mission trips
2). Recruit, train and enable a team of volunteers to meet and support the needs of the children
and youth ministry programs.
3). Ensure all volunteers who work with children and youth have completed the screening and
training requirements of the church’s current Child Protection Policy and Procedures. All trained
and screened volunteers are to be included in the church master list maintained by the
4). Facilitate and support planning and coordination of VBS. Serve as the VBS coordinator
when not filled by a volunteer coordinator. The role of the DoCYM includes the following
a). Assist the VBS volunteer coordinator to prepare VBS budget
b). Authorize expenditures in alignment with the budget
c). The DoCYM shall assure that the VBS coordinator fulfills the following responsibilities:
(1). Ordering necessary supplies
(2). Arranging and conducting volunteer training including steps to ensure child
protection requirements are met
(3). Plan and Coordinate VBS mission activities
(4). Plan and arrange for participants in daily opening and closing activities
(5). Conducts publicity and promotion for the event
(6). Facilitates registration of students
5). Prepare, submit and track children and youth activities budget.
b. Christian Education
1). Facilitate and coordinate the Children and Youth Church School program. Serve as the
Sunday School Superintendent when the position is not filled by a volunteer. The DoCYM shall:
a). Facilitate the curriculum selection/design and development for grades K-12.
b). Ensure all resources necessary to support the curriculum for Children and Youth age
groups are acquired to include literature, teaching aids and other necessary materials.
c). Provide administrative/logistical support to Sunday School Superintendent

and Confirmation classes.
3). Coordinate use of classroom and other facilities for the most effective use in the Christian
