Job Description:

REACH teens for Christ. TEACH teens the Word of God.  Lead teens to HELP those in need.


Basic Function: The Director of Youth Ministries will oversee, coordinate, and direct the ministries to children and teens from 6th grade through 12th grade.  The director will have the faith, energy, passion, knowledge, and giftedness to lead the youth in becoming disciples and making disciples of Jesus Christ.



Moral Qualifications:

  • A clear testimony of faith in Jesus Christ and a vital, growing relationship with Him;

  • A sense of calling to youth ministry;

  • A staff member who strives to live in such a way as to bring the utmost respect in representing the church;

  • A deep commitment to and love for the local church;

  • Agreement with the Bethel United Methodist Church Statement of Faith, ministry vision, and core values;

  • A routine financial supporter through regular tithes and offerings.



  • Planning, conducting, coordinating, evaluating, and selecting and providing resources for the church’s ministry to youth;

  • Build appropriate, authentic relationships of integrity with youth that become the basis of meeting needs, sharing Christ, and involving youth in peer ministry with other youth;

  • Cooperate with Director of Christian Education to coordinate Middle School and High School Sunday School;

  • Coordinate all aspects of the 6-12 Grade Youth Group, ensuring there is opportunity to develop fellowship, spiritual formation, discipleship, mission opportunities, and the experiencing of Christian community;

  • Work with adult volunteers and youth to develop a Youth Council;

  • Meet with the Youth Council periodically to schedule, plan, and carry out all youth ministry activities.  This includes delegating appropriate responsibilities to members of the Youth Council and other youth workers to carry out parts of those plans.

  • Be responsible for securing all necessary funds, travel arrangements, leadership, adult chaperones, and providing Christian teaching, times for worship, prayer and scripture study throughout youth trips, retreats, and mission/work camp experiences;

  • Plan for an August or September youth kick off event for youth ministry;

  • Develop relationships and maintain regular communication with parents of participating youth;

  • Coordinate roles and responsibilities of volunteer leaders of the Sunday School Class and Youth Group.  Provide support, encouragement, Christian community and spiritual nurture for volunteer youth workers through leadership retreats and regular prayer/support meetings.

  • Help volunteer youth workers develop mentoring relationships with youth and provide training aimed at leadership and faith development among the youth.

  • Attend regularly and specially called staff meetings and retreats, as able;

  • Attend church council, Charge Conference and other meetings as needed or requested;

  • Prepare, submit, and administer a youth budget and annual goals for the church fiscal year in consultation with the Youth Council, ministerial staff and Committee on Finance, and submit to the Church Council or Charge Conference;

  • Prepare and submit an annual summary report of the mission, goals, plans and successes in youth ministry to the Charge Conference, and periodic summary reports to the Church Council as requested;

  • Other duties as directed by the Senior Pastor.



  • Ability to work with youth and young adults;

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;

  • Ability to plan, organize, lead, and guide complex projects and spontaneous activities related to youth ministries;

  • Competence in basic lay counseling and listening skills appropriate for youth ministry;

  • Willingness to work cooperatively with others, to maintain a positive outlook and disposition, and to be flexible in solving problems;

  • The ability to protect the reputation and integrity of others through strict confidentiality.  Refraining from indiscriminately sharing personal information is critical.  Discretion must be exercised when dealing with the public, youth and their parents, and the church’s leaders and members. 


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of college-level or higher course work in Christian Education and/or Youth Ministry;

  • Experience in youth ministry (volunteer and/or paid) for 5+ years;

  • Thrives with a team environment, including Staff, Administrative Council, and Youth Volunteers;

  • Demonstrated excellence in leading youth and volunteers;

  • Satisfactory background check with local and national databases.


Staff Relationships:

  • The Director of Youth is hired by the Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) and reports to the SPRC through a liaison;

  • The Director of Youth shall perform the above responsibilities under the direction and supervision of the Senior Pastor, complying with employee policies that may be adopted;

  • The Director of Youth shall meet with the Senior Pastor for clarification of the vision for this ministry, strategic planning, and for guidance, prayer and support;

  • The Director of Youth Ministries shall be evaluated annually by the Senior Pastor, with input from the SPRC liaison. (Questions or problems related to the job should be first discussed with the Senior Pastor.);

  • The SPRC will also be available to provide support and hear concerns.
